Valvoline Restore & Protect

I saw a sign at a carwash / detailer in Cambridge (Ont) last week advertising VRP oil changes. Word is on the street!

The Valvoline oil change place that is right near my condo in Guelph has been advertising VRP oil changes for a while now, it’s around $120. That’s a comparable price to Mr Lube or Jiffy Lube but is way more than I pay to do it myself.

Because it’s not available in Canada and even when I cross the border into Niagara Falls NY they don’t stock it in the closest Walmart and even when I drive an extra 40 minutes I have had a hard time finding it in the other Walmart there. The last time I crossed the border I ended up having to get it at Autozone and it was almost $40 (about $60 CDN) 😵‍💫 I can get ESP here for $43 CDN. And I’m still not convinced that VRP is the right choice for doing 10,000 mile intervals. I feel like it’s more of a 5-6k oil.

For me I’m happy that it’s achieved what I wanted, a very good reduction in consumption. If ESP 0w20 doesn’t keep the consumption at the same lower level I can always switch back to VRP later.
Good response, Patman. I’m thinking about using VRP longterm just for the “Protect” portion of the oil.
I too have wondered why people would run the 4 OCI’s, then switch to something different. Then it hit me- VRP isn’t marketed as an extended drain oil like many other oils and many folks here like to do extended OCI’s.

I don’t do extended drain intervals so it’s fine for me. Makes senses that others who’d like to go extended, such as yourself, wouldn’t want to stick with VRP after the 4.

I’m not saying VRP couldn’t handle extended drains, but if I were to attempt to extend it, I would definitely run a series of UOA’s to determine a sufficient mileage IMHO.

Another reason why I’m going to ESP 0w20 is for the better manufacturers approvals that it has over VRP, even though my Civic isn’t particularly hard on oil. It just makes more sense to me to use a better oil that costs me less and one that I can buy right here at one of the many Canadian Tire locations

I'll be switching back to Kirkland after I use the VRP in my wife's crv simply because I have the oil already. What I use after that is up in the air. If I use the VRP then Kirkland, it will be years before I have to decide if I were to take a guess. Maybe 3-4 years. Here's to hoping the car lasts that long!

The claims were bold but very specific and to the point. I didn't sense any bs from the get-go. They also went as far as to show you visual testing and even let LSJ into their lab going however how they came to make it. I get that some people are always skeptical of everything, but I did find the level of skepticism surprising, considering what I feel was an abundance of evidence that it does work. Interestingly enough, I'd say at least 9/10 people are noticing significant reduction in oil consumption and cleaner internals.

Valvoline did a good job or whoever developed what it is. This is a victory for Kentucky. The south will rise again.

Good points. At the time I felt that Valvoline would not risk their reputation with false claims or marketing. We just had to give it time for people to use and experience it.

Makes sense…..thanks for your point of view

Skepticism can appear like nihilism of one is not careful to keep all out negativity in check.

I know I’m going to get flamed for this but I really like LiquiMoly MoS2 additive. A lot. I put it in everything. I swear the stuff works.

But, is there any possibility it affects the cleaning ability of R&P?
That’s for older engines. Their Ceratec is for anything modern.

Hey, remember when people said VRP was just marketing hype? Good times.
That's what you get when people with no product experience whatsoever comment 🙄
It's a big thing these days lol
Go back and read 1-5 pages from a year ago. Entertaining stuff.
I remember it well and so does my colon . The new turd word now is Tariff....no stool softener needed... 💩💩💩🤡

+1 As it turns out it looks like they have a winner on their hands.

I posed a question not too long ago asking why someone would *not* run this all the time outside of those with very particular certs needed or doing extended drain intervals and the more and more I think about it, this is probably the best oil to run "forever" in normie 5K intervals in *most cars* (yes, I know certain cars are always exceptions....) to avoid ring deposits and potential oil burning.

It cleans superbly, but the jury is still out in long term usage. I’m optimistic though.

I think cleaning is so important that even if the wear performance or consumption was just “meh”, it’s a great trade off. So many engine issues that end its life come back to deposits. Whether that’s stuck rings, hydraulic tensioners that don’t work right, overheated pistons from ineffective gallery cooling, etc—cleanliness is essential to longevity.
