Valvoline Restore & Protect

Maybe these V.O.A.s' of 0w-20 S.P. can help . Also likely apply to 5w-20 and 5w-30 . These V.O.A.s 'are from different videos . From these charts the non GM Dexos1 approved ( on bottle or sites ) look to meet G.M.'s own oil . These are also likely to meet L.S.P.I. requirements . Using non DEXOS 1 P.U.P. 5w-30 in the '18 HYUNDAI Accent ( 1.6 Ltr. , G.D.I. ) and plan to use P.U.P. 5w-20 from fall to next spring .

Alright… I caved and bought some VRP at Walmart last night. I’m about 1,500 miles and about 3 months into a run of 5w30 M1 EP HM. VRP is going in at the next oil change with an OEM filter. This is a 4.0 V6 2010 Tacoma with ~62K miles. I may go ahead and dump the M1 fairly soon. I have an Ultragauge MX that I can plug in and keep track of engine hours… on my old 2007 Tacoma I was putting about 2,000 miles every 185 engine hours. Does anybody have any thoughts on how often (hours/miles/months) I should be changing VRP? I do a lot of short trips of less than 5 miles and a good bit of idling. This truck has lived most of its life on M1 EP, I don’t think there’s any major sludge or anything, but there’s definitely a build up of varnish/deposits from all the short tripping. This truck doesn’t burn any oil and runs great, I just want to see if VRP can actually clean like Valvoline says it can.

How many consecutive OCIs have you run Mobil-1 EP? I'm assuming it's Triple Action HM.
I wouldn't be in a hurry to dump an oil that's arguably better than the one you just bought.

Besides all that, I scratch my head at all the members here that are only buying one OCI of Valvoline Protect. The directions stipulate four OCIs is the recommended dosage..... which means it works pretty darn slowly at cleaning older engines that have various degrees of buildup..

It’s had M1 EP for most of its life. My parents bought this Tacoma new. It’s had I think 2 runs of Valvoline Modern engine 5w30 a couple years ago that I got for next to nothing on clearance. I’ve done most if not all of the oil changes on this truck. It may have had a couple of free oil changes at the dealer when it was brand new, but I can’t remember.

That engine is one of the easiest on oil that has ever graced the earth. Run out any synthetic to 10,000 miles and dont worry about it.

Bought two jugs during the Amazon sale and am going to try it in my daughter's 2018 Subaru Forester with 87k miles. Oil has been regularly changed at 5k miles. How long should I go on the first R&P fill?

Since that engine looks pretty clean except for the varnish build-up, I just run you're typical OCI if it's not too long. What has your normal OCI on this truck been? It will be interesting to see if the VRP removes that varnish.

I just got back from WM and there was only one jug left, 5w-30 and it was on the very top shelf. I wanted to take a closer look at the verbiage on the jug but couldn't reach it. VRP is flying off the shelves!

Early in its life, up until about 40k miles it was getting 5k oil changes, which usually worked out to about once a year. It used to do a lot of highway and hardly any short trips (up until about 2016), but now it does a lot of short trips and idling. I’ve been aiming for an annual oil change with M1 EP or EP HM, but that might only be 2-3k miles sometimes. I should probably be doing an oil change at 6 months with all the runtime I’m putting on it. I’m not entirely sure that more oil changes would equal a cleaner engine, I think it’s hard to keep them clean if you aren’t regularly getting them up to operating temp and keeping them there for a while. This engine was nearly spotless through the fill hole before it started get short tripped a lot.

My 2007 Tacoma started getting a lot of deposits as it got older too, it was operated in similar conditions to the 2010. It had Penzoil yellow bottle 5w30 for the first 30k of its life and then M1 or M1 EP until I sold it. This is a pic of the 2007 right before I sold it in 2018 at just shy of 90k miles. I know the new owners, it was still running good up until earlier this year, it blew a head gasket and they put a different engine in it. I don’t know how many miles it had when they put a different engine in it, but it never had an oil related failure. I do know that they’ve been pretty hard on it in the 6 years they’ve had it, I probably wouldn’t want it back now.

I was in a Walmart in Niagara Falls NY just yesterday and they also only had one jug and it was 5w30. Was that the same location you went to?

I haven’t posted here in years but saw this super long thread and wanted to add my read world test into the mix. I don’t have any pictures but I am currently starting an OCI of the Valvoline Restore & Protect in my 2011 Forester. This is one of the early oil burning FB25 engines. Low compression in at least one cylinder and running this oil to see if it might help clean the rings and fix the compression issue / oil burning. Burning about a quart of every 700 to 800 miles currently. I am not expecting anything major but had nothing to loose except the money for the oil.

If it doesn’t help, I will be replacing the engine soon.

I will update once I get some miles on it. I have 45 miles on the OCI so far.
Well I am pulling the plug early on this test (pun not intended lol) because the vehicle is feeling increasingly unreliable and I don’t know that the engine is going to last much longer. I don’t think its fair to say that the oil had a chance to really do anything as I only got 405 miles into the test. I think the engine is beyond any help any oil can give. So I am going straight to the engine replacement project and draining the oil soon.

I will say in those first 405 miles oil consumption stayed the same as I had been getting before. For what its worth.

What a coincidence!
There is another Walmart about 15 minutes away from that one and I found that they had a lot of VRP in that location about a month ago when I bought a jug. So the next time you cross over the border, if you're looking for VRP, try the other location (it's at Niagara Falls Blvd and Erie Ave)

I was just curious more than anything else. Plus, I was waiting for my family that was at other stores nearby, so I spent time in the oil aisle. Thanks for the tip about another WM nearby.

Even when I don’t need any oil I always enjoy a bit of time perusing the oil section there! 🤓

Not reliable is a good reason to change the motor.

Too bad you can't run it long enough to see if it helps. If the motor is going to die anyway, unless a safety concern or really inconvenient, roll the bones until it craps (or gets better) :)

Where I live most of my drives are least 45 or more miles from home. I would prefer not to have it die on me for good far from home. Plus I am itching to do the engine swap and get it running at 100% again.
