Valvoline Restore & Protect

Everybody cries out for controlled tests and empirical evidence, until it comes out, then it's ~flawed~.
I generally don't 99.9% of the time. Gokhan though pointed out some interesting things about this one in particular.

Seems like a weird way to track fuel mileage. I never get the same mileage per tank because for one I never fill up at the exact same level on (not so accurate) fuel gauge...plus my driving habits change from day to day. I can get 12 mpg one tank and 19 the next.
Might be weird but it works 🤣🤣

You can sneak over to NY State (or Michigan, depending on loc), do an oil change, and smuggle it back in your engine's oil pan
I don't think it's worth spending a couple hours crossing the border to buy oil. Lol.

It reminds me of my sister saying how many days she gets to a tank. Maybe to her it makes sense because she doesn't want to take the 30 seconds to do the math after refilling, but it's the least accurate way to track fuel mileage and in reality it does not work.
I would bet if the fuel mileage was calculated in a more accurate way it would prove the oil had no affect on fuel mileage.

His original claim was the fuel mileage seemed to get better after using VRP, which could be possible if the rings were stuck and then became cleaner and freed the rings up to make the engine more efficient at making power (ie, less ring blow-by).

I cross the border all the time to buy oil, and grab the cool snacks that aren’t available in Canada, fill up my car with much cheaper gas, get a cheap but yummy steak at Longhorn and grab a bunch of plastic straws from McDonald’s while I’m at it too 😆

Don't they check you at the border?

I go for car shows twice a year (Syracuse Nationals and Detroit auto Rama. Shopping I've never been into crossing the border for. I will usually grab some techron or something like that while I'm there but that's it.

Yep, I calculated the right way. The mpg was 17mpg when I first got it and after doing the VRP for awhile it went to 22 mpg. I drive the same roads same speed so I know it had something to do with the oil. I’ve even gotten up to 25 mpg on i40 but I don’t drive it everyday.

They just ask how much I spent and if I bought tobacco or alcohol and then they let me go. I don’t think there is any kind of restriction on bringing oil across anyway.
People cross to San Diego from Tijuana to buy oil all the time. Prices are ridiculously expensive and availability is super limited down there. Crossing a few jugs of oil is no problem. Also the sniffer dogs are not trained to sniff out the oil either 😁

That's really impressive then. Any change in oil consumption or anything else or did I miss that?

that's a pretty dramatic diff, have you considered pulling the filter early?

I changed out the oil filters early the first 3 runs at around 1500 miles each. I’m on my 4th run now and I’ll change the oil and filter at 3000 miles this time.

It did burn about quart every 3000 miles when I first bought the truck. It burned about the same with the first run of VRP. The second run it cut back to about a half quart. The third run of it, it barely burned any oil. I’m 2000 miles in on my 4th run and it hasn’t burned any yet. I’m thinking the VRP has definitely made my engine more efficient and smoother running.

Nice. Sounds it like it definitely is working for you.

I haven’t posted here in years but saw this super long thread and wanted to add my read world test into the mix. I don’t have any pictures but I am currently starting an OCI of the Valvoline Restore & Protect in my 2011 Forester. This is one of the early oil burning FB25 engines. Low compression in at least one cylinder and running this oil to see if it might help clean the rings and fix the compression issue / oil burning. Burning about a quart of every 700 to 800 miles currently. I am not expecting anything major but had nothing to loose except the money for the oil.

If it doesn’t help, I will be replacing the engine soon.

I will update once I get some miles on it. I have 45 miles on the OCI so far.
