Valvoline Restore & Protect

Walmart is now offering this restore and protect in bulk ebox oil changes, $64.88. Not a bad price compared to other lube joints.

Substantial cleaning for only 500 miles. It looks like this is more sludge though, which will clean up faster than piston deposits. Most oils can't clean existing piston deposits.

The way oils are traditionally designed is to mitigate deposit formation and keep them at bay.
Good point. At the same time, it at least indicates it could be successful at also cleaning piston deposit over time; if it’s this effective at sludge removal in only 500 miles.

Of course, a better comparison would’ve been a similar sludged control engine running a different off the shelf synthetic and filter dissection at 500 miles.

I really think buster makes a good point about synthetic oils in what they cannot do, that is the reason for Valvoline Restore and Protect. In an engine that has already had its 1st oil change at like 5000 miles, and then goes onto use a quality synthetic oil at reasonable OCI's or by the OLM, then Valvoline Restore and Protect may not be needed. We cannot compare an off the shelf synthetic in a test against VRP, that ship has sailed.

Now, a used vehicle with cheap oil that is changed when it is changed, can benefit from VRP. I do not even want to see any so-called control test with VRP versus another oil, I want to see real world testing from BITOG Members and others. Valvoline might be onto something, let's see how this plays out over the next few months or so.
