This weekend I purchased a used K&N Air Filter from the junk yard for $5.00 it fits my 1995 3.9L Dodge Dakota and is in perfect condition other then needing to be cleaned, should I clean it and us it? I am a little cautious because I have read on this forum this brand of filter might let dirt by for the gain of horsepower.

Frankly unless you have zero other choice, why chance it? No performance gain from a K&N, and only a downside if it leaks.

Never saw a performance gain from a K&N. Only made my truck noisier. Pain in the rear to clean and you are basically off the road for a day. I tossed it in the trash and replaced it w/ a paper element.
K&N apparently creates a problem from a situation that has already been solved.
Supposedly a K&N filter on the Mustang 4.0L will greatly help the engine breathe, and removing the air box will be even better.
I've never noticed any increase in either HP, mileage, or throttle response in any of the vehicles I've tried them in. But, I've also never had a problem using them (i.e.-MAF fouling). I tossed the one in my Mazda6S and went back to an OEM paper type. I actually think I get better throttle response with the OEM! But for $5.00 give it a whirl, especially if you have the cleaning stuff on hand.
