2005 Mayback 57 delivered March 25th, 2005 with 175 miles on the odometer. I took a sample after driving 15 miles home from work. The car comes with a twin turbo 5.5 Liter V 12. It has 550 BHP and 660 Ft Lbs torque but I put in a Renntech chipset that they tell me gives another 150 torque. The stock 6,100 pound car (one I borrowed with 4k mile on the clock) did a 0 - 60 hop in 4.9 seconds. I will break it in some and try with the new chips later.

I ordered Red Line 5W-20 oil for my first oil change that I will probably do after at least 1,000 miles. The recommended oil is 0W-40 Mobil 1 although any 229.5 oil will do.

Dr Haas,

I've really enjoyed our conversations - of course my wife is beginning to wonder about all the strange men who keep calling me! LOL

So where do I send the bill for my RX???

The signature of this oil looks like a combination of the RL and Synergyn chemistries. It most certainly isn't GF-4!

The HT/HS viscosity of this oil is probably right around 3.5 Cp, given it's kinematic viscosity @ 100C. So the 3.3 Cp, shear stable RL 5w-20 should be fine, but I would keep a close eye on the bearing wear if you suffer fuel dilution from the short trips. That alone may necessitate a bump up in viscosity.

Ted

Ted recommended the Amsoil series 3000 5W-30 that I think is a very good option if I was to go thicker. It is 229.5 approved too.

After seeing that they started with a 30 wt oil with a lot of Moly the RL seemed as a good choice and I do like to be thinner than most people tolerate.

Two good choices. The Amsoil S3k is a very strong oil. I'd also consider the M1 5w-30 EP if your looking for a "thin" oil. In fact that might be your next best bet. Should thicken less then the Amsoil S3k and be close to a 20wt with 50% more PAO and a strong additive package.

For this money a question of oil spec must be part of deal.

RL is ester based, what is your view on esters?

The Maybach is taller by 4 or 5 inches, several feet longer and probably 6 inches wider (than the S600). It is like 19 feet long for example. I do not have the exact stats at my finger tips. The car is very different. It is about 2,000 lbs heavier yet is faster. Yesterday I did a 4.8 0-60, 1/4 mile in 13.3 at 106 MPH. I cannot wait until it is fully broken in and I get the thinner oil in there.

Some interesting things:
There are 2 different a/c compressors, one for the back and one for the front. The alternator is water cooled and is 350 amps. It has a refrigerator. The turbos are both water and oil cooled. There is a power steering fluid cooling radiator. The turbo inter-cooler is water cooled - by a separate radiator system. It has a limited slip differential, not one of those wheel braking systems. The list is long.

Hi,
AEHaas - for the life of me I find it quite amazing that you do not know what oil was in it from the factory! After all you write papers on oils!!

I suspect it is either;
Mobil SHC Formula MB 5w-30 or, (unlikely)
Mobil 1 Euro specced 0w-40 (AMG-MB factory fill)

Regards
Doug

I was told the car comes with Shell Helix Ultra and with this analysis it is the 5W-30. I am getting closer, more access to people who are the actual technical experts. It is slow going but I am making progress.

For example, I am trying to increase the hydraulic transmission pressure to get more through-put. It will make the car shifting more noticeable but get more BHP to the ground and increase MPG at the same time.

I did this to my old '92 MB 600SEL (was the car replaced by the Maybach) and got the car to start in first gear instead of second. It usually takes me a year of owning a new car to get it the way I want it.

I think we'd better get used to it...seems to be the way Euro oils are going. Apparently, the ideal 2 to 1 ratio Ca to Mg for food supplementation of human beings does not apply to automobiles. That much magnesium in supplementation could cause a human's seals to...um-m-m-m...leak.

Look at all that phos and zinc! Higher than even HDEO oils. I'm wondering if this is some sort of special blend first-fill oil Shell does for Mercedes?

Is it true the Maybach doesn't use the Mercedes Flexible Service System and requires fixed mileage oil changes? If so, what is the recommended OCI?

If I remember correctly the OCI is 10,000 miles or 1 year. I do not usually pay attention to these things as I do more frequent changes in all my cars.
