I have a 2009 corolla which has 50,000 on it. I want to do a drain and fill on the ATF this spring. My question is should I go to dealer and buy the world standard as it's a long drain fluid or use a product like Amsoil or mobil 1. I think there is a drain plug so I'm not going to need a lot of fluid to replace

No need to drain really. Thats why there's WS in there. I wouldnt waste my time unless I was changing the filter too.
For now, I would stay with the W/S fluid until you are sure that other after market ATF are OK to use. This is what I do. Once your comfortable with the replies of others that have used after market ATF's in the real world and have seen some data, only then change to which ever brand that makes you sleep well at night. I have yet strayed from T-IV in my wifes 01 Lexus because I haven't been comfortable with the responces of others using after market brands. Some like after market brands and some don't! Different story with my 04 Altima. Anything after market labeled as a Multi-Vehicle ATF seems O.K.
If you insist on draining when you don't need to then go to Toyota. Toyota prices are very fair.
The WS fluid is very thin compared to a product like M1. I'm not sure what Amsoil has out for it, but if it were mine I'd be headed to the dealer.
Which engine did you get in your Corolla? I think a 2.4L was available for the first time last year.

Its good to change it out this summer if you could do it yourself and just goto Toyota for the ATF and that should be good for another 50,000 miles.
Or just use any good over the counter ATF just as long as it gets changed and you drop the pan, clean it out and change the filter is what matters

I drained the pan and refilled at 20,000 miles. I plan to extend to 30,000 miles and stick with that interval until the car dies. Auto trans need fresh fluid to get good life out them, WS is relatively cheaper than a costly repair down the road.
I am a Toyota Tech. WS is vehicle specific and should be used to replace when it was in there from the factory. Although 50k is very early, I would recommend doing it at the dealer along with the 50k or even the more important 60k service. DO NOT DROP THE PAN. We dont use a gasket, only an adhesive(FIPS). It must be compatible w/ the fluid. If you want a different fluid, trans must be flushed, not drained, so as not to mix the different fluids.
snakerupa; were you able to do any used WS analysis? Readings I have come across suggest the fluid have decreased the additives quite a bit by 30,000 miles with highway driving.

Yeah, you do not have to totally replace the fluid if you switch. At least not according to Amsoil regarding their WS compatible ATL fluid. I've got documented emails from them stating i'll be just fine.
I've done 2 d&f's on my 07 tundra, and one on the 4runner. All is well, and they both seem to have better light throttle shifting characteristics. Although i don't have any real DATA on it's use, i feel comfortable using it.
I also beleive it is a much better fluid than WS. YOu can also use Redline D-6 if you wish.
Good choice to dump the fluid now. It will remove 75% of the contaminants in the fluid, from just a simple drain.

toyotaguy, you don't know me and I certainly don't expect you to take my word for it, but do some research and you'll see that regardless of what the manufacturers and their minions would have you believe, there's no such thing as a lifetime fluid, or for that matter, a 100,000-mile fluid. You are absolutely right to change it out early. HOW early is a matter for debate, but 50,000 miles is not too early by any means, especially for a simple drain-and-fill.
I do agree that you should use the Toyota WS unless you can find an aftermarket fluid that clearly states that it's approved by Toyota. Note that I said "approved by", not "recommended for" or "suitable for".

If your are doing drain and fill and going a year or something between, then I wouldn't mix fluids, just pay up for Toyota WS. If you are going to do 4 or 5 rapid drain and fills, the ATL would be fine. The fluids are compatible, but that doesn't mean mixing is wise.
Despite what you read here, a true synthetic ATF can go 100,000 miles plus in a normal service application. But if the conditions are abusive, or there is a chance the ATF can get contaminated, then 50K miles is not too soon.
