Toyota balking at engine warranty for RTV in oil pickup on GR86

The issue here is the misleading advertising - its ****ty any way you cut it....to offer a track pass with purchase and market you car as a track-ready machine without a huge bit saying "BUT WILL IMPACT YOUR WARRANTY IF YOU DO IT".

I don’t agree that’s the issue, the issue is whether there is a defect covered by the new car warranty.

People (requardless of their wish to absolve themselves of personal responsibility) are obligated to read and understand the terms of warranty’s and to know (as any reasonable person would know) that engaging in a competition (and an auto cRoss almost certainly is) may negatively impact warranty coverage.

If the particular track event was the one he was provided admission to as part of the sale was the event that precipitated the denial, that I would agree was shady.

To stalk his social media for shots of it on the "track"...it was an auto cross for God's sake is crappy. He'd have no issue dealing with this in court with a compentent lawyer.

People who put this stuff out there on public pages should expect a company being asked to pay for an $11,000 plus warranty ticket to type their name in google.

The tech inspector didn't even look at to see the issue....just a big "no".

I agree that’s no bueno.

The lack of mention of this RTV in the techs “story” is also very suspect.

I do agree, based on the facts presented Toyota should take care of it.

Autocrossing and my commute to work use to be the same thing :) DENIED !

I am used to this baloney from GM.

So, arbitration time? Has he gone through that already? I didn't read the article. Service Manager denial or Zone Rep?

It's a sports car for crying out loud. Is it only for appropriate secretaries doing the "Starbucks Challenge" on the way to the office?
GM will warranty your current Camaro if you track it...They warrantied my 1998 Z28 when I blew up the rear diff at the track.

Fair/correct.

Agree 100%. Pay to play/personal responsibility is typically my mantra w/r to cars/warranties. I track my Sportwagen and have modified it heavily. However, I still expected during the warranty period that items that would have had zero impact from those modifications to be treated fairly w/r to the warranty...and they did! I had several auxilarly componets that failed replaced by VW under the warranty with no work on my end to hide any of my modifications etc. That's how it should work. HVAC motor under the dash failed? No issue. Awd unit blew up? Yeah that's a no and I wouldn't have expected any different. Should be common-sense driven but I get it...it can't work that way.

Agreed and it wasn't the particular event..that would have really been something if it was!

Sure.

Agreed.

This story reeks of the Ford F-150 Raptor frame damage debacle from a few years back. Ford's major selling point RE: the Raptor was it's "Baja proven" suspension and toughness. Not long after it's release, customers started using their trucks exactly as Ford advertised, and the trucks would bend their frames after being launched off a jump. Ford quickly denied all warranty claims, citing "unapproved and excessive use".

I'm thinking most manufacturers re looking at this case, and others like it from a financial viewpoint only. How many Toyota owners reading this and other forums are going to say, I'm not going to by another Toyota again because of this! How many who are considering buying a Toyota now are going to read this and say, Now I'm not going to buy a Toyota for sure.

A lot of outrage, but will it change buying decisions?

Bending a frame jumping and driving around a parking lot at 40mph is quite a bit different in my book. One simulates conditions many drive like every day, the other not so much.

Not sure how Subaru still hasn't learned how to apply RTV correctly. This was an issue with the early FRS/BRZs. Now almost 10 years later the 2nd gen cars have the same problem again.
I believe the FA20 in the WRX are having the same problem too. Upon reassembly someone puts RTV in the wrong spot

Subaru has been lathering up oil pumps forever. This is just one of the reasons why I hate this crap and use a gasket whenever possible.
I don't even like using it corners of a 3800 intake or the ends of a SBC Chevy intake. I remember my old 2.2/2.5 turbos, the valve cover was mostly RTV. I hated that. It is 2022 you would think manufactures would have a way to make sealing surfaces RTV free.

Toyota has had RTV application issues for years. The Tundra cam tower leak is related to how the RTV is applied. This has been around for decades now and I’ve seen it happen as early as 10k miles. To my knowledge they’ve made zero changes to how the RTV is applied and they choose to just deal with it on the repair side.
Many mfg had issue with RTV in the crankcase sump and sometimes in the cambox when they went gasket- less.
This is a subaru built engine and car. Where are the BRZ claims?
