Hey all, went to get an oil change on my 2015 Rav 4 with the 2arfe

I believe it calls for around 4.6 quart ish

The shop I went to used a whole 5q bottle as I could see him pour it in. When it was too late I asked him and he said it’s fine these engines don’t care about oil level

Any ideas if this is too overfilled? Should I pull over somewhere else and ask them to remove some?

Thanks

Yes. Not linear.

And yes I am exaggerating- probably not 3-4 quarts but could be 1-2
Hmm with filter change it seems like the vehicle calls for like 4.6q

I def saw them remove filter but we can’t assume they drained it fully fully. So let’s assume .1q prob still up in there due to incomplete drain. + 5 quarts added. Meaning 5.1q added when it calls for 4.6

So at least 0.5q over with leeway to be a tad more

I can double check the level later but I was certain it was pretty far from the max line

This may shed some light on this discussion, or give you something to think about ... maybe ...

Probably not since nobody here is talking about fluctuating oil levels.

As has been discovered, the dipstick sometime shows different readings with the same amount of oil in the sump. So, if OP's oil reads high today, maybe tomorrow or the next day it will read lower. The takeaway might be to check the level several times over a period of days with the car being driven between the times the oil is checked. It sometimes helps to explore all the possibilities, even those that seem unlikely, especially if the unlikely scenario has happened before.

I always do my readings cold. Tends to be more consistent and easier to see. Post 31 pic was taken on a cold engine.

As do I, always in the same spot, too, and on level ground. I have a parking space and that's where the oil is checked. Always after sitting overnight. The key, IMO, is consistency

I run 5 quarts on my 2023 Rav4 Hybrid 2.5L with a new filter since new. No worries....
Different engine, the A25A.

In mine, I found that it wanted 4.5 quarts for full, or a hair over. Seems odd but… on this car I do put in just 4.5. Maybe the oil pan is different, rav4 vs camry?

Earlier today: 2AR-FE engine oil level with 5-quart fill, 2011 Camry, approximately 2,000 miles on oil. Picture taken after car sitting overnight before first start of the day.

In my 17 accord, it’s 4.5qrts I believe. Since I bought it in 2019 I’ve always poured the whole 5 quart jug in. I normally am down maybe a 1/2 quart at my 5Kish mile oil change so I don’t worry about it.

It puts me right at the full mark or just a tad over. Assuming you are on a level surface when checking oil level and not a slope ?

After watching videos of engines with transparent oil pans, I will never again stress about "overfilling" oil by up to 1qt. It is pretty scary how quickly the entire oil fill disappears from the pan after startup. Better to have a little extra than suck in air.
Snapshot from one of those video. Topping off a little extra not only seems irrelevant but maybe even beneficial.

How about posting links to some of those videos? I've only seen the one from the Russian garage, and it was both informative and entertaining.
