The SECRET Oil Companies DON'T Want You To Know...

Why don't we try and concentrate on the technical aspects of the presentation and IMHO depart from making silly comments about the ticks and facial expressions? Everyone has a personal way of making presentations.

If you don't like his presentations, don't watch them.

Does HPL do engine testing? They don't seem to use the standard recipes because they are not certified. Do they copy formulations such as 229.5 so they know those oils will work in those applications?

HPL has >2.2 billion miles of data on their engine oils from a wide range of applications and environments.

Fascinating. For some reason, when I heard the term "base oil," I always visualized it as jet black. Kind of like the stuff that drains from my drain pan. Thanks for posting the link.

Those two make an interesting pair. Dave looks like he can't wait for the filming of the video to end. LSJ, on the other hand, can't wait for the next opportunity to say something....

The amber appearance of oil mostly comes from the additive package which is usually an ugly dark brown.

He's not throwing them under the bus, HPL's oils were not used in this comparison and I thought he was pretty clear about that. He just used some of the ingredients that HPL also happens to use. But as he said in the video, it's not just about the ingredients, its about the total balanced formula that matters.

He can't use HPL's actual finished oils without then someone on this forum complaining about "this is just an HPL ad". Which actually did happen in one of his recent videos when he used their no vii.

Some guys just can't win.

Bingo!

This quote is from the video.

"So this is actually a really important thing to understand because a lot of times oil marketers are going to say 'well this boutique blend is better because it has these fancy ingredients.' Well fancy ingredients doesn't always translate into better performance. You have to define better."

That was a low key slam on Lucas.

In this thread: a lot of judgement from guys who have never spoken in front of a crowd or "put themselves out there" in public for the world to see.

If you want smooth talking and pretty faces, Hollywood is that way -->

Can we stick to the content please. I don't care what he looks like or sounds like, I'm not marrying him.

Yep. Lake is every bit in person how he is in those videos. That's just his personality.

This was interesting. HPL took a Dex 1 Gen 3 and turned it into a track oil by among other things using a special ester. This is why the oil didn't do as well oxidation wise compared to Napa but again it's a track specific blend rather than a street oil blend. As LSJ mentioned earlier in the video you really don't want to use a race oil on the street.

It would be SO NICE if all oil formulators, whether of base oils or additive packs, dyed their oils to resemble the old school green German Castrol.

And those oils performed the same as that great oil……..!!
Liqui-moly is green dyed ,made in Germany too if this helps. from that I understand it's some good oil.

Worked with a Cajun squeeze box player - last name David …
He had 4 names (grandfather thing IIRC) … used to tease him that they gave him 4 names and still forgot the last name 😉

You need to see this:

How do you dye a DI additive package when the combined chemical components are in such a concentrated form and dark brown to black?

Dyes have no protective or functional use, so the color of lubricants serves no useful purpose, other than to differentiate products as to application or viscosity.

I was expecting "Bake at 350°F for 30 min" after the mix .... 🤣

To be honest with you, if I had anything to do with the HPL marketing, I would not allow them to make this video.

Don't get me wrong, the video was very helpful and it was nice of HPL to provide the facility so overall it was very informative and good for the average consumer.

However, my take after watching the video which confirmed what I already knew is that for the average consumer (including 95+% of bitog), you don't need a "boutique" oil.

Again, very informative but imho, not so good for the product marketing if I were in charge. It was much better for Valvoline and/or NAPA than HPL. If I am providing my lab, I want the focus to be on my products. I think this failed marketing 101.
