The SECRET Oil Companies DON'T Want You To Know...

Does this mean that the well maintained '01 V70 T5 will be posted in the "for sale" thread? Asking for some friends. 😁

My son and his fiancé get what I bought on sale or decide to pick up. Currently that is Mobil FS for the Tucson and PP Euro-L (with a qt of HPL PCMO) for the Forte.

Who knows what happens when they decide to move after the wedding. Hopefully I can still be there to help like @Astro14.
Not to go too far off topic, but no, the V70 stays in the family.

Fiancée had a 2014 Subaru, that was limping its second transmission along, had a bit of rust, and had no AC, when the engine ate a sparkplug and lost compression on no. 3.

Ironically, the much older Volvo is running perfectly, has good AC, no rust. No apologies/issues with that 23 year old car.

They figured out their budget, examined their needs and shopped carefully, ending up with a 2023 Mazda CX-50 turbo with a nice trim level. They really did a nice job separating need from want, and staying in budget. Bodes well for the future.

Sure, but you seem to be packaging all boutique oils under the same umbrella and because he happened to formulate his own boutique oil that performed worse in one test, that "throws HPL under the bus" because they make boutique oils too... that's not how it works.

HPL's oils weren't even tested (like you said). He just grabbed some raw materials off their shelf, through them together and tested it. That in no way reflects poorly on HPL since as he also said in the video all the raw materials and the ad packs for every different oil brand all come from the same few sources.

(and just in case you're wondering, I'm a very satisfied customer of HPL)

This quote is from the video.

"So this is actually a really important thing to understand because a lot of times oil marketers are going to say 'well this boutique blend is better because it has these fancy ingredients.' Well fancy ingredients doesn't always translate into better performance. You have to define better."

That's true, it's the final formula/balance that matters as you can't just throw some expensive stuff together and expect to get it right. HPL themselves have said this, that's why their Euro line has very little moly as they discovered that adding more moly to that specific product reacted negatively with the ad pack they were using.

He said a few times "application dictates chemistry" and that was another main point of his, you can build a race oil or you can build a passenger car oil and use "fancy ingredients" in both but you should never put race oil in your honda.

But he also did touch on what makes HPL oils different/better, I don't remember the details but there was some discussion about it. He also did admit that going out side the API box can lead to a better oil.

I don't know. It's interesting how a number of people can watch the same video and end up with a different take on it. Maybe I need to watch it again with fresh eyes in the morning.

Ya gotta test, in real engines or none of this matters much on paper. As LSJ said, it's the most important thing. And the additive companies do that for you. Tinker too much you could create problems, so it has to be done carefully.

I have a hard time watching these because he speaks out the side of his mouth and never blinks
I don't think we are allowed to gripe about how irritating the guy is. But yeah the bug eyed excitement, for entertainment only. His content was good, just repeating BITOG 2014 or so, if paying attention.

I'm more focused on the content. He's getting to some of the core issues in some of these videos.

There are only (3) YT channels related to oil that are good IMO:

1. Lubrication Explained
2. LSJ
3. Spanish YT channel (just for VOA's)

All others are gimmicky at BEST and downright laughable.

....meantime FordBossMe is comparing B/S Lab additive levels and Project Farmer is putting oils in coffee pots.

Everyone has ticks, patterns, and idiosyncrasies when they speak. It takes deliberate effort and practice to stop. And unfortunately the camera makes it seem worse than it is in real life. Anyone who has done a lot of recorded public speaking knows what I’m talking about. Like me for instance I am a hand talker which can be very distracting. I have had to put my hands in my pockets or hold a drink to ensure I do it less before.

You mean an oil race isn’t an industry standard test?

In this thread: a lot of judgement from guys who have never spoken in front of a crowd or "put themselves out there" in public for the world to see.

If you want smooth talking and pretty faces, Hollywood is that way -->

Can we stick to the content please. I don't care what he looks like or sounds like, I'm not marrying him.

Slightly predictable responses from some in this group.

I wonder if I can change my username to Nostradamus. 🤔

No. Enjoy my opinion. Go back and read it.

people are allowed to state their opinions on him whether or not they have done public speaking. By that logic we cant say some food is bad because we aren't chefs?

Never said the content is bad. Just the endless staring is jarring.

My point isn't that you can't have an opinion, it's that there is just too much judgement from guys who lack understanding of what it takes to do this.

Everyone has an opinion until it's them in the hotseat and then suddenly they're much more forgiving of their own flaws and idiosyncrasies.

Also keep in mind that discussions like this can drive a guy to stop producing content, which is a real concern of mine. Your opinions aren't just stated in a vacuum where no one gets hurt. It wouldn't be the first time BITOG has driven guys away.
