The Koreans Mean Business! (Hyundai Genesis)

It's interesting that the company that wins the 2008 North American Car of the year Award needs improvement but the company that wins 2009 award doesn't. Bias is my guess. Either way I don't think a company like Honda that in 2009 sells a V6 that calls for a $1,600 belt replacement every 100,000 miles could win anything these days.

I did say it was a personal opinion (which all opinions are) did I not?

BTW, the statement about Honda was made whimsically. No offense needs to be taken. So chill.

seems the marketplace is ok w/ copycat designs. lexus benchmarked mercedes and it has worked out pretty good for them. hyundai seems to have benchmarked infiniti and early reports seem to indicate it was a good move.
at the risk of sounding xenophobic, that's just the way asians are. they target the best in class, apply their own excellent engineering, and build a copy. toyota did the same thing in NASCAR, they took the chevy motor, reverse engineered it, and basically built a ground up superior V8. the good thing was, it allowed the domestics to start w/ a blank page design as well, and now they all make great race engines.
the real nice thing, is that the Japanese can't rest. they have to be on their game. the domestics need to get on their game too, and the euros better step up also. it didn't take long for lexus to develop an image/reputation, if BMW and mercedes don't watch out, they can fade.
hyundai better watch out also, because the Chinese aren't too far behind either.

I don't hate the BIG-3 I'm just not happy with their current product lineup and think they could do much better to meet my needs, where has I said that I hate them? I would go back to them if they built products like Hyundai does. (Which fit my needs).

I don't love Hyundai either, but I'm currently using this brand and following them because if they keep up the good works, your darn right I would go back to them. Besides they are building plants in the US which is good for the US and they seem to be the only automaker making a decent profit right now so whats the problem?

Every car company needs improvement, including Hyundai, Toyota, Honda or whatever... but IMO no where near the BIG-3. And I'm not bashing the BIG-3 I'm just stating what I believe to be true.

Regardless if they win car of the year or not, this doesn't change IMO. Hyundai has been working hard for the past 10 years to undo all the bad choices and the inferior quality of their previous products, so has GM, FORD, CHRYSLER. The difference to me is that Hyundai has been a lot more successful at it that's all.

I speak from experience... I have seen later model Big-3's and while much better than past models they still have their quirks and things that make you think twice. I then see the Hyundai I have owned, my mom's Kia, my sisters well abused high-mile Hyundai and all have had 0 problems and only wearable parts replaced.. That keeps me believing in Hyundai, but that doesn't mean that nothing else can be good out there... I'm just waiting for the other brands to catch up to what Hyundai can offer to me. Good quality rock solid reliable vehicles without annoying quirks as a very good price unbeaten by others.

Bring me another brand that offers this and I will be the first to switch...

This comment is unwarranted. Last I checked most "Foreign" vehicles are built in North America now providing jobs to Americans.

Sure maybe not at the crazy rates of pay or with the fancy benefits, but this is what got the BIG-3 into financial trouble in the first place??? Along with that they also had a supplier list that's too long and depreciating market share...

If the company was stupid enough to let this happen over the last 20 years then they deserve what they got IMO!

The CEO's of these companies were paid a lot of money to prevent this from happening and steer the company in the right direction which they didn't do... Well there has to be consequences which we are seeing now.

It's them that everyone should be mad at, not the competition for taking advantage of the situation. THIS IS JUST BUSINESS AND COMPLETELY FAIR.

Quit bashing other makes for the BIG-3's past stupidity by using the "Quit buying foreign, they are taking away jobs" [censored] because that just doesn't fly with other brands building models in North America providing jobs to North Americans.

The only problem is that the BIG-3 didn't wake up earlier and clean up their product line to the current standards of vehicles they are producing (Which are much better), and are now running out of cash because they have such a lack of confident consumers buying their products combined with high operating costs (labour & benefits) and all this during an uncertain time in the markets...

The BIG-3 were blind for so long while their competition was not.. Sorry bud, but they deserve what they got and I'm not going to buy a vehicle because it's good for some $16 Million dollar paid CEO's pay cheque and keeps the economy "propped up" while pushing myself into personal bankruptcy because of the cost of repairing these otherwise inferior products. I think this is what other consumers realized when they switched to "foreign" brands.

Now that Rick and the rest of these cronies have realized it's too late they get a bailout to keep the companies afloat???? Sorry this makes me not want to buy the vehicles even more, even if the quality is better today because it's like we paid for them twice and that's really not fair...

I'd rather not support unions.

I looked at a Genesis last week myself. Absolutely amazing car.

+1

At this point, while I like to buy American made products when they're a fitting option, I would specifically avoid UAW products if there is an alternative.

When I shopping last fall I did not even sit in a Genesis. In hind sight, I probably should have at least drove one. But between it being an entirely new car, their first V8, and a Hyundai, I didn't.

At the risk of getting myself labeled as a Japanese fanboy.... The only ones I considered (drove) were TL & IS.

Lincoln feels too much like a grandpa car IMHO (plus I have trust issues with the big 3's quality).

Hyundai and Kia have made V8's in the past just not for North America and not recently. These companies have been around over 50 years... Again just not in North America... Besides... Just because it's their first North American V8 in some time, doesn't really mean that it has bugs or could be buggy. Lots of car companies come out with a new first year engine that are great!

Lincoln feels like a Granpa car to me too...

I'd rather have the coupe with the turbo 4. More potential. Open up the intake and exhaust and stick a boost controller on it and it'll outperform the V-6 with ease.

The coupe comes with Brembo brakes. Nice!

Not only that but it would be easier to fix because they also stuff a v8 under the same hood... So a 4 cyl would be a piece of cake to service with lots of space and room to add mod's!

Absolutely!

But that is something only truly known in hindsight. I find my feelings in this area kinda like Consumer Reports willingness to give a "recommended" rating to a new model. They do it on some, but only those with a very consistent record. And they quit doing it on Toyota

I think a brand is nothing more than a promise. Some make better promises than others. If they want top dollar, I want a top promise. If they'll accept less than top dollar, I'll accept less than a top promise.

I agree Hyundai's quality is improving greatly. At this point, if I was in the market for a new car even I would consider their models that have been out a while. And I'm ridiculously opinionated and biased in my personal judgments of quality. I'll admit that, just don't expect me to quit being that way

Holy [censored]! The 2.0T is based on the Mitsubishi 4B11T used in the Evolution X! The Genesis version just has a teeny tiny turbocharger. So with a bigger turbo (the Evo turbocharger might even bolt up), this engine can safely handle GOBS of boost and put out 400+ hp on the factory long block. You could build a helluva car from just a base 4 banger Genesis coupe for a lot less money then the competition.

Sweet Jesus, Buschur Racing is going to produce upgrade parts for the 2.0T. They're one of the top Evolution/DSM tuners in the country. http://www.buschurracing.com/

Q&A Time:

Q: So what do you have planned for the Genesis Coupe?
A: We want to build a fun street car, run 10's, and also turn the boost down and do some track days.

Q: How will your new toy benefit the community?
A: We will conduct parts development, parts comparisons (just like we do now with the Evo items), and R&D to push the limits of the car.

Q: Emm push the limits. Sounds like you are pretty serious?
A: I don’t think the Hyundai community has seen a serious tuner shop come in and set the pace as we are planning to do. There are some name brands out there, but for the most part they do not conduct parts testing to inform the consumers of what they should actually buy. We are talking factual dyno for dyno proof. That is what we WILL do.

Q: Dyno proof. I like where this is going. What are you going to offer us?
A: We will be offering a full line up of parts such as intakes, exhausts, upper & lower IC pipes, head work, blocks, forged internals, turbo kits, FMIC kits, etc... just like we do with the DSM & Evo.

Q: Can you offer parts in stages so people can upgrade easily and affordably?
A: Of course. We will offer staged kits as we do on our Evo products and other car products so people can upgrade their cars in stages and save money instead of buying stuff all together.

Mark my words, there's going to be some FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAST Gensis coupes out there with the 2.0T. Anyone with performance in mind will get the turbo 4 pot. The fact it's RWD is AWESOME!

Think I might mosy on down to the Hyundai dealer soon and have a looksy. Depending on how much money I make for this years tax season, I might consider getting a base Genesis. For only $20,000, rwd, and en engine that can put out some serious power, how could you go wrong!

I wonder how hard it's going to be to get a Ford 9 inch under the back of that puppy.

Hyundai apparently needs more improvement, as their quality is below Ford's, Toyota's, and Honda's.

I'm not sure why some people feel the need to lump the Big-3 together. They are 3 distinct companies, with 3 distinct levels of quality. Ford didn't even take bailout money.
