The Koreans Mean Business! (Hyundai Genesis)

To me they are just the opposite, they drive and ride great, but they look unbelievably bland and derivative in pictures.

It's like somebody took one of those imaginary, no-brand cars off of a bottle of wax, built it, and called it the Genesis.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion, but it's sexy to me and had the ponies under the hood to satisfy me. It was a well rounded luxury performance vehicle and a very good effort for their first attempt in this high end of a category IMO. I like it a lot but that could be because I like "Foreign" designs and am a bit partial to Hyundai after having such great luck with my Santa Fe, and the great luck my mom & sister have had with two other models from that company.

Shannow... As for patents, if it infringed they wouldn't be selling them in the US/Canada so they either changed it enough or met the requirement and this my friend is what every business does, so why can't Hyundai do it? At least it means jobs for Americans and not Chinese!

Wonder if depreciation hits this car as hard as other Hyundais. If so they'd be an awesome value as used cars.

Oh, and it looks like the illegitimate child of a Lexus LS and a Mercedes.

Good point... I will buy a used one!

And now that you said it, it does look like one of their children... hehehe

Nice car for the money that's for sure.....

I don't know about patent infringments or not.

Even if they don't do it blatantly I am sure they bend the rules within an inch of their lives.....

Who cares who makes it, it's how it looks, performs, and survives the test of time. After seeing my Santa Fe I think this car would have it's cake and eat it too.

And other automakers don't? Think about all of the innovations that have been made over the years, and tell me that other automakers don't copy good ideas. Take cupholders, for instance.

My dad owns an '03 Santa Fe with about 66k on it last I checked. He's had terrific luck with it. My mom owns an '05 Tucson with about 12k on it (she drives infrequently) and also has had good luck. They're both pretty happy with their purchases, and I know my dad at least will look at Hyundai again for his next car.

Thank you... Was thinking this, but didn't want to say it because I thought I might be a bit biased because I like this company.

Don't know if it's the angle but I think the sedan looks better. The coupe looks kind of bloated. I rarely like a sedan over a coupe too.

Not to the same degree.

Is that your opinion or are you able to back that up?

If they do violate patents, wouldn't they be out sued out of business by now?

They are similar but still different... I think the Lexus would be closer than the Infinity... They all look the same today and I think that's why the sell well... People want it!

Here is what the Coupe engine looks like... Not the same at the non-coupe version.

While looking for the other Genesis engine I found this and just had to post it! Now we know the Koreans mean business, even the cars are talking about it with attitude!

Here is the V8 4.6 Litre Genesis engine not in the coupe:
(Best picture I could find...)

They considered launching a new brand to market it under (as Toyota did with Lexus, Honda did with Acura, etc). I think not doing that was a mistake. Most others have a separate brand for their high end cars. I've not been in a Genesis, but they sound like an ideal car to launch a high end brand with.

Seems like they missed their chance to do it. So what now? Will they forever be selling high end luxury performance cars right beside Accent's? I think their target demographic on this one will have trouble walking past an Accent on their way to drop $40k.

Just my $.02. Nice car though.

See I think that they are trying to use this car with the Hyundai brand name to break the "garbage or inferior" product perception of the past and the way to do that is to get your everyday joe to walk by these fabulously looking pieces of engineering in the showrooms as they buy their accents etc. This not only builds confidence in the brand and leaves a good taste with joe consumer but also gets people talking about the higher end cars... Then before you know it people who can afford these cars are in the show rooms seeing what the fuss is all about and the rest takes care of itself.

No need for fancy brand-names and price-tags especially in this economy and I think Hyundai realized that... Smart on them! Rethink Hyundai as they say...

Sure, it will help more selling their other cars this way. If its just supposed to be a low volume tool to strengthen the reputation of their other cars, it will serve them well.

If they were looking to seriously compete against the premier luxury makes, I don't think this brand positioning is the best way to do it.

BTW, I may be close to their target on this one... In the "value luxury market" I'm generally pretty frugal. For example I get cloths at Walmart. But I wanted a nice high performance car. So last fall sold my 95 civic, and got an 06 Lexus IS 350.

Neither, I just wanted to stir the pot.
