Texas State Troopers Begin “Waistline Enforcement”

I have no problem with health insurance being rated based on risk. I cannot say much more than that for risk of going political. I'll leave that for individuals to study on their own outside of this forum.

The military has height and weight standards. I don't see why police cannot have the same. Both are in the protection business, albeit in different arenas. However, a level of physical fitness is required. However, as others have mentioned, paid time to perform PT would be a reasonable expectation.
How about guided PT before shift?

If I could do PT at 6am before working a 12 hour shift than so can officer Wiggum

Physical ability is no dependent on physical size. The ability to perform the actions of the job are not dependent on size, but of physical ability.

Of course there is a typical correlation to those two, but as long as an officer can pass the physical fitness requirements, size should not be a factor.

I have no doubt someone large, let's say Shaq for easy identity recognition, would've obliterated they physical requirements with his non-compliant waistline while also being quite a 'commanding presence'.

Yeah, a single waistline number isn't really a great measurement of fitness for larger people... If they can pass some relevant endurance and fitness tests for duty then what does it matter?

Works to a point.
I was always tape tested as I'm built like a linebacker. As a cadet, they were always on me for weighing too much, but after the tape came out, a 50" chest and 32" waist and 18.5" neck meant my actual body fat numbers were low.

Maxing the PT test also helped seal the deal. I was always "lucky" to be the troop carrying the M-60

But even so, carrying that extra weight was hard on my joints and I do pay the price for it today.

I would say to the younger guys, don't let your fitness go away, it's hard to get it back and keep it when you are in your 50s compared to in your 20s.

It would be debatable whether this can be enforced unless they keep 2 types of polices around with 2 career path forward, the one on beat and patrol with a higher requirement and higher pay and the investigator type doing mostly non chase work and requires less physical, lower pay, etc.

It's a good idea. Being unfit physically could also affect the well being of an officer's partner if one cannot perform physically at 100%.
When I read the article I noticed that female officers get nearly 4 minutes more to run the 1.5 mile test than male officers do (15+ minutes for females vs. 11+ minutes for males). I guess the guy with the female partner is at a disadvantage if he's waiting for her help?

Are you aware of the difference in male and female physiology?

Is that you wrestling the snake?
Yes, that's me.

Haaaaa! That's a Burmese python that was someone's pet that either got away or they let it go in the neighborhood. We got the call and i responded knowing everyone else on that shift was terrified. These guys (the gals) can reach 20ft but they average between 12 and 15. It was as tame as can be. I ended up taking it to local a breeder.

Incidentally, these are now outlawed in the state, being the most invasive of the giant snakes for reasons just like above.
