I think it’s a good idea.

Controversial, but I’ve never thought cops who were overweight and out of shape could do their job effectively.

Good for Texas State Troopers leadership for having some common sense.

They need to do the same thing here in Louisiana.
I have been to the Paragon Casino buffet in town (Marksville, La.) about 3 times. The State Troopers and local police and sheriff deputies love the buffet. I call them belly draggers. While moving down the buffet line there is a rail. Their bellies drag on it as they are loading their plates up.

It's a good idea. Being unfit physically could also affect the well being of an officer's partner if one cannot perform physically at 100%. Only a small percentage I feel would fall into that category. The problem is with the higher ranking officers with desk jobs. Many are far out of shape, have a hard time reaching their keyboards from a big belly and should set a better example for the remaining officers.

I kinda wanted to go into law enforcement in my early 20's but felt I was too skinny. I watched the show COPS and couldn't imagine myself wrestling and trying to handcuff a suspect resisting arrest.

The only way this works is by allowing officers to workout during their work hours. The hours worked, the crappy shift work, and the stress cause a less than health lifestyle.
Because cops have the only stressful job that requires they maintain physical standards.

An hour a day and not eating like total **** will keep most people on acceptable shape.

Where I live about a decade ago, really heavy set Police Officer. He could not even wear his belt, would put it in the back seat when he went on patrol. New Chief came in and they let him go.

Take fat slobs (in the interest time, so don't be offended) who want insurance....they must have some right to it, no?

Now take convicted drunk drivers. What's their position re insurance?

My point being that if you're suicide-ally fat, you shouldn't be included in any insured pool. It's unfair to fit people. They drink bourbon and eat Twinkeys for breakfast and I should kick in to their insurance? Nonsense.

Im not going to knock overweight police officers, I have a lot of respect for officers.
Yes, I do agree with Texas, they need to be fit and what they are doing sounds reasonable.
The police officers are just a refection of our society in general and dont hold it against them or make fun of them unless your going to make fun of the other 60% of the people in this country.

Americans poison themselves to death on fast food/junk food and improper eating habits then rely on doctors and drug companies to keep them alive while they complain about the costs of being kept alive. It drives me nuts.
The majority of Americans know what is healthy and what isnt but they chose to ignore that. Corporations have the human brain figured out how to get their garbage fast fried food into their customers at massive price mark ups/profits.

Hard to stay fit when you spend the majority of your time sitting your rear end, hiding from the hot humid weather, and eating beans and rice with every lunch. What next? They all get gym time and then we read about some sort of steroid scandal?

To be fair - Texas has over 2800 state troopers. So good job to the other ~92%, and wish them strength to fight off the blanket statements due to the "bad apples" in that ~8% of chubs.
- Sincerely, an obese civilian.

I have no problem with health insurance being rated based on risk. I cannot say much more than that for risk of going political. I'll leave that for individuals to study on their own outside of this forum.

The military has height and weight standards. I don't see why police cannot have the same. Both are in the protection business, albeit in different arenas. However, a level of physical fitness is required. However, as others have mentioned, paid time to perform PT would be a reasonable expectation.

You can drink bourbon and eat twinkled for breakfast and not be a fat POS.

Plenty of people spend the majority of their time sitting out of the heat. No excuse.

You cannot blame these officers. In some cases they are in a hurry and have to eat fast. This is not something recent.
Lol
