Just did an oil/filter change, wemt from Castrol Syntec 5w40 to Pennzoil Ultra 5w40 on my Audi V8 and overall oil temps are up by 5-10 degrees •F.

Is this normal? My freeway cruise oil temp is about 208-214 F and idling or stop and go it is around 204 F.

Thanks folks!

It may just be the difference between old thinned out oil vs fresh oil that's still as thick as it was supposed to be.

5-10 extra degrees F is not a cause for concern in this case, I think.

Where did you find PU 5w-40?

How many miles do you on the new oil?

I personally don't like high oil temp, but some members here say it might be even beneficial because moisture burns off faster and high temp additives start to work better.

10 degrees seems like a significant rise, I wouldn't worry too much about 5 degree difference.

Normal for you

Give the detergent a chance to gobble up the EP and then plant its own.

Hey - you pay a price for high detergency - Factory clean and worn out!

Thicker oil usually runs hotter on the highway/freeway, if all things else are the same.

I'd keep an eye on yours. The temps are not too high, but I would not expect such a change from very similar viscosities.

Yup, I learned this recently the hard way. Thicker oil runs a lot hotter, in my case, this lead to consumption via volatilization I suppose. I tried a 15w50 oil in my car that calls for a 5w30 during the heat of summer and that oil burnt off pretty fast from a car that has 0 consumption normally.

I was also told by engine builder's of my cars engine that the "oil pickups" were too small for such a thick oil and I was basically starving the top end of the engine. I went back down to a 5w30 and lo' and behold, it's not consuming a drop anymore.

What's the HTHS on the Syntec vs the PU?

5w30 EC to 15w50 is a pretty extreme jump in viscosity! Even with the jump to a different 40 grade formula, it may take a while for the consumption characteristics to stabilize. The oil pickup is no smaller than the main oil gallery. IIRC it's a square plastic 'straw' about 1sq.in

i had my temps go up 10-15 degrees from normal on the freeway when one of my brake calipers started dragging slightly. extra load on the motor.

For what it's worth... with about 75 miles on the oil, it looks like the temperature differential has gone down by about 5 degrees.

Just got my UOA back from Blackstone.. looks like my original syntec 5w40 with only 4k on it had thinned out a decent amount.. could be the answer.
