I don't knwo if my eyes are playing tricks on me but I went to walmart 3 days ago and I loooked at the bottle, I don't see Corvette Or Viper approved any more. Last month I emailed WPP and asked them if its really safe to use them in the Corvette or Viper, I get a email back a week later and said "We are researching and will get back to you as soon as possible". I have a aquintance with a 1997 Corvette and thats what kind of oil he uses.

Corvette requires Group IV 100% synthetic and ST may only be a Group III (blend), I am not sure.

I personlly would not use it in anything I own because they are apt to change suppliers like the wind, one day this and next day that and only because of price. Thats all Walmart cares about, how much it costs them.

Others can flame me but I don't care, ST products to me are at the bottom of the scale IMO and I would never use them. If ST was 10 cents higher then Mobil 1, no one would use it.

ALL corporate oils are going to be cheap as they see who they can buy it from, from the cheapist supplier. The cheapist I have found of store marketed oil (not the gas station SA crap) comes from AUTOZONE. Its their own valuecraft brand junk that is SF rated.

IMO, its just plain dumb to use a spertech oil in a corvette. How much was te car new? How much is a replacement engine? What is the fuel economy (high for a v8, Ill give it that)?

Considering the factory fill is M1, and it is available at an attractive price, why would they ever want to buy store brand oil? Sounds like they bought a car that they couldnt actually afford.

Couldn't we say the same thing for my truck? I spent $2,700 on it...isn't a $12 or $25 oil change small in comparison?

If SuperTech meets 4718M requirements, I'd have no problems using it...

revised

Corvette's use Mobil 1 which is a 100% synthetic and ST may only be a blend, I am not sure, but I would not use it under any circumstaces, for reasons I stated previous.

There was a story about Walmart and their distribution system on CNBC Business some time back and if you seen it, you would not buy those Walmart branded products. They are cut-throat with vendors demanding price concessions. If you cannot control the urge to spend your money at Wlamrt, then buy only name brand oil products. ST products are average products supplied by lowest bidder.

SuperTech Full synth is made by WPP and is a Group III synth. The SuperTech Blend is also made by WPP. The dino is is made by a couple different blenders. Searching this forum holds the full answer as it's been discussed to great lengths in the recent past.

Mike,

I fail to comprehend the reasoning though...yes, ST may be made by the lowest bidder, but if it meets 4718M, and GM calls for 4718M in this specific application, what's the problem?

Wow, why the agression guys. Lots of people go the cheapest route on their vehicles, reguardless of how much money they make. That doesn't mean their stupid or "buying something they can't afford". It may not be the wisest decision, but no need for all the hostility.

BTW, how many people can afford to drop $20,000 on a car? If you have to get a loan to get a car, doesn't that mean your buying something you can't afford?

Thats very True. My Tiburon FX was $4,000, I can't afford it with straight cash, so I took out a loan. And Look at me I use Supertech oil Filters , buy 1 get 1 free AAP Filters and Cheap Supertech 10w30! My Dad bought a brand new Dodge Dakota V-8 all in one payment, he use supertech, My roomate bought a brand new JeeP Liberty Financed and he is a off-roader,he use Supertech Semi Synthetic. And my aquaintance from work with the corvette?? yeah he use Supertech too and he financed that Car.

I know I'm drifting off topic, but a lot of people who are rich will still borrow money to buy a car. If they can get a special deal where they pay only 4 or 5% interest, but they know they can invest their money and make 10-15% or more on it, then they won't pay cash for the car even if they could have.

Even I would not subject a Corvette to SuperTech!!! That is wrong!!

Now all we need is for someone to claim SuperTech solved his piston slap in his Corvette!

I would love to see someone with an ENzo post they changed their own oil with Walmart Synthetic 5W30!!!!

What would be the difference in using Castrol Synth 5w-30 vs SuperTech Synth 5w-30???

Nothing. They're both Group III oils. One just has a name brand attached to it.

That is the concept of MONEY MAKES MONEY!
Inflation is another reason!
$100 now is more than $100 3 years later. Time-Value-Money!

I don't think Group III vs. IV base has anything to do with meeting 4718M as it was pointed out, a handful of GrpIII base oils meet this standard.

But I aggree with Mike on Wal-Mart. "Cheap" is too much of a religion to them. i just don't trust them much at all ... even if I would use some of their oils and filters in something I didn't care too much about.

I'd still like to wnow if Supertech meets 4718M ... and "why" if it doesn't.

If my expensive car came from the factory filled with Mobil 1 5w30 like the corvett is then that's what I would use period.

================================================

I always assumed auto manufacturers did not want synthetics in new vehicles until the engine's break-in period ended..... usually a minimum of 3000 miles. Are Corvettes being sold broken-in? I also overheard Ford Inc is now suggesting 8-9 thousand before switching to synthetics. So which is it?

I believbe that the Corvette is run in a bit more than your standard engine. I understand it gets M1 right from the git-go. Engines with factory micropolishing (all) require no special oil to break in. To my knowledge only RedLine says not to use their oil before 3000 miles. That's probably more of a CYA since a new engine is more likely to fail in the first 3000 miles than at any time.
