Yes, they certainly don't help for expanding ones ability to interact in person. I would imagine that painfully shy kids would use them frequently to avoid real interaction.

Today it was a white BMW 5-series crossover with out of state plates, followed by a white Ford Fusion.. The Ford Fusion cut me off, FROM the shoulder.. and a gray Nissan Maxima was in on the weaving through traffic chain of cars. At least white Ford used the blinker when coming from the shoulder. Good thing I am not a road-rager. I usually peek at the drivers, to see what manner of society feels it is OK to just drive without blinkers, not in proper lanes, can go within inches of a car in front of it.. just to get caught at the light, up ahead. Assuming they don't simply go through it.
It's hard for me to describe the stuff that actually goes on on these roads.

There's very little money to be made driving around (and, it would have to be an unmarked car) looking for actual dangerous behavior. Agreed. You focus on negative however so much positive out of thee things too. They make my work life so much easier....And so much less time wasted communicating on phone with folks when a couple sentences do. Also no stupid voicemail.

I focus on the things that concern me and my society I am a part of. I realize the tremendous use smartphones can and do have for business use. I take no issue with that and see it as a needed tool in the modern, fast paced world.
It's the use of these devices in place of human interaction and partaking in the real/physical world that is a great concern. We are a nation of blind zombies to anything outside our 4 inch screen. It's become an addiction and dependence upon these things. I think people are MORE stressed partially because of them. We are in essence, slaves to the smartphone and to the companies that provide the access to them.
