Not really. I can promise you I'm on a 27" iMac desktop. When I am away from my desk...I am away from any internet.

Too bad the only way I can better myself in this life is to stare at smartphones from 8-5

Also, I'm amazed you think you can simply "leave" the internet

That's not how this works, that's not how any of this works

Huh?..ahhhh....ok then.

Eh, having a kid keeps me off the net....gotta take care of the family!

It's like everything else in life....just need to have balance.

Just got my first real smartphone, andtI really don't use it that much... maybe more to the fact that I'm still learning how to really use it....

You remind me of an insect. Always buzzing around...irritating people.

You talk like I am staring at my smart phone while in your presence.

Shoo fly...shoo!

I went and saw Star Wars with the lady this evening.

A chair next to her was out of commission (had a black cover on it) so we put our wet coats on it. The lady sitting on the other side looked up from her chicken wing bucket and said how we couldn't use chairs like that because the theatre was full. We both just stared with confusion. Wasn't even worth the breath of air to talk to her.

During the opening trailers, she kept using her flash on her phone to take pictures of her under disciplined child. She also texted, Facebooked and Amazoned all throughout the movie.

I tried looking for her after the movie to get additional movie theatre etiquette from her, but she was no where to be seen.

Unless he's posting all day long on a smartphone, or has himself walked off a cliff while posting on BITOG, the only point you're making is your lack of understanding of the word "irony".

For example, irony would be someone who averages 2.2 posts/day chastising someone else who only averages 1.5 posts/day about "posting all day long". Of course your blunder may have been intentional, veiled humor and not simply a case of poor language and comprehension skills, the possibility of which (however remote) I'll concede may exist.

Andrew- I hope you haven't become hyper sensitive to smart phone use and jump to conclusions every time you see someone with one in front of them...

An example:

I have one but rarely post anything with it- I don't have a Facebook, Twitter or any other social media account of any kind. On occasion I'll post something via smart phone here, but that's pretty much it. Sometimes I'll browse the web (here or other sites) at lunch IF I'm alone. If I run into someone I know or my work partner and I go out, I leave the thing alone (have no desire to use it) and converse with them instead. I also use it for work- parts look up, ordering or research (when the shop puter is tied up or I'm out on a job). Since I make and receive work related calls during the day, naturally the ringer is on... until I go into a store. Then I silence the ringer. So, those few moments that I have my phone out at a store isn't because I'm tweeting, posting or whatever- it's because I'm turning the ringer off.

I realize that not all people are like this, but simply having a smart phone doesn't mean you're some kind of disconnected, oblivious drooling zombie. Whether you realize this or not, you come off as by having a simple flip phone that you barely use/require somehow makes you a much better person or more connected with reality. It doesn't. A guy like you could easily own a smart phone and not be an oblivious drooling zombie. Now maybe you have no legit use for one, but you seem to want to bag on anyone who owns one and does. Maybe I'm wrong?

Oh man! That would truly be about as annoying as it gets! What a perfect example of how many people are with these things. They can't even put them away and enjoy a movie.
Pitiful woman.

Like I said earlier....the dearest person in the the world to me has a smart phone. Guess who bought it for her?

I am only talking about constant and inappropriate use of these things...bordering on complete dependence at the expense of real life...our surroundings. That is why I provided the link of a guy walking off a cliff while using one. Thousands of people die yearly because of these gizmos...I assume you are aware of this?

I am. That's why, in the last paragraph of my post I stated that I realize that not all people are like this (reasonable/legit use of a smart phone). Natural selection will handle those who can't be bothered to pay attention to their surroundings.

Andrew -- the only reason that you agree with pop, is because his post is "against" that of dishdude, with whom you are sparring. the old line applies -- the enemy of your enemy is your friend.

the eric makes a good comment about natural selection.

'gotta go and buy some food for the q, and watch a couple of those fixed, concussion plagued ball games.
have a good day, all.

I live across the street and on a hill above a city park with playground equipment. Swings, slides, monkeybars, picnic tables etc. You would be amazed at how many parents bring they're kids to the park and then sit on a bench and stay on they're smart phones while they're toddlers play and try to entertain themselves. I feel like yelling at the parent to get off the phone and pay more attention to they're kids, but I don't. To me, it's a form of passive child neglect. It irritates me to no end.

You may have your opinion of why I agree with Pop...even if it's a false assumption. And I'll make my own assumption here...and that is that you see yourself as some sort of amateur psychology expert.

Truth is, dishdude posted a completely inaccurate reply to my original post. He did it simply to ruffle my feathers and/or "get a rise" out of me. Pop explained it rather well, to which I agreed.

That's really all there was to it....I would have agreed with pop no matter who had posted the same nonsense as dishdude did. But yes...it certainly did feel good that pop backed up the point of my post at the expense of a fella only joining the thread to irritate me.
Perhaps you should apply some of those sharp psychological assessments of yours upon dishdude? Just an idea.

Dawn of the Dead.....iphone drones.

No big loss the guy was a drone. If he did this I'm sure he could just as easily crash into another vehicle and kill an innocent motorist while staring at his stupid smart phone. Darwin did us another big favor.

I agree and see this every single school day as parents walk the kids to school past my house. The mom always has her face bent down into some stupid smart phone screen...paying no attention at all to her kids. Even the parents driving the kids do this....I can see them looking at the phone while they try to drive the kids to school.
And you know what? I'll bet you a thousand bucks these so called "mothers" are probably on the smart phone while the kids are home....trying to compete for attention. I can almost guarantee they spend more time on the phone than paying the needed attention to the children. I also see it at parks just like you mentioned. It's epidemic.
Very sad....and reprehensible.
