Someone do a long-term real world (like the NY taxi cab test) or bench test to destruction two motors: One using something like, say, Mobil 1 and the Mobil 1 filter, and the other using WalMart's SuperTech conventional and the SuperTech filter - and see if there is really any material difference in the engine life and/or condition of the components.

Ok I know this is synthetic vs. dino but what I am trying to get at is oil choices on opposite ends of the real or imagined qaulity spectrum.

One motor each would not be enough for a TRUE study. There would need to be a few dozen of each, different drivers who don't know what oil is in the sump to get some data.

Thousands of Taxis all over the world run just fine for hundreds of thousands of miles (most after 100k of police use) using bulk oil and "cheap" filters so that proves something.

IMO, if you are changing the oil with ANY oil and filter and showing some attention to the engine, you'll be well ahead of the vehicle out there that still goes with no problems.

PS: Taxi service really is easier on the engine compaired to the soccer mom doing her 2 mile trips in the winter.

Las Vegas Taxi tests would be EASY...

I don't really hold the M1 Taxi test to much regard, because they used Mobil 1 Extended Performance run at 15,000 miles OCI's. Dino isn't supposed to be going 15,000 miles. If it's changed at a reasonable interval, it will work just the same IMO.

Either type changed at proper intervals would be "better".

The typical soccer mom doing what they do best? (Taxi service / short trips in a normal vehicle..)

Conventional changed more often than recommended by the MFG. No oil gets rid of the combustion by products and water in the sump.

Changing the oil when warm does.

Due to the NYC idling law (3 minutes, IIRC), NYC cabs still see a lot of starts, but the engine isn't likely to be fully cold, like some of Soccer Mom's starts.

Depends on where in NYC. I personally wouldn't try the cops in lower Manhattan, but the part of Brooklyn where my uncle lives, I'd bet I'd be relatively safe.

Bob - thanks - very revealing. I find this interesting:

Does the fact that this test is 14 years old have any bearing on the validity of the results if it were to be perfomred today?

If it was run today there would be even less of a difference in that test.

SL/SM really IMPROVED the oils (esp in cold starting and deposit/cleanness control) over 14 year old ones. Yet engines have gone the distance with yesterdays oils.

I'd bet that today's conventional would do a lot better than syn oils 14 years ago.

Soccer Mom duty with PP and 5000 OCI's has given very good used oil analysis for me. This would be over about 220,000 in 2 Toyota V6 engines. Both driven very hard, lots of starts each day, lots of stop and go and 33% freeway.

Neither consumed any oil in 5000 miles. The current one is at 70,000 and going strong. The oil stays golden until 3800 miles into the oci. I'll run it another 80k and trade it in.

Now I would really like to see a test with a hockey mom. Wonder what Sarah used in Alaska right near Russia. Do they have a Wally in that town she lived in?Did Todd change the oil himself????What kind of filters did they use????You know as someone else pointed out, those guys that deliver the newspapers now that car would be a great test. I do not think many run Redline. Newspaper deliver that is tough stuff.

Obvious you have "issues" with Sarah that you need to sort out.

Soccer/hockey mom is worst than a Newspaper delivery use. Newspaper is continued running for hours on end. A postal would be worst for brakes and transmission but still for engine oil the start / turnoff engine for short trips would be worst.

Once a engine is started things get better from there. The longer the engine RUNS the better it is (as long as idling is not involved).
