Mobil 1 in it's current form.....

In 2006 or 2008, M1 placed a strong 2nd in Amsoil's comparison test. Now it's middle of the pack.

First it was the move to Visom. I was ok with that. Then Valvoline caught them with what was apparently a post Katrina version of M1 that wasn't meeting the IVA test. I never thought that was a big deal due to the circumstances so that didn't bother me.

They also diluted the brand and made M1 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance, which is what almost all of the other brands have also done. Then they came out with Mobil Super. Why?

The overall performance though is now on par with the other brands. Mobil 1 does not stand out like it used to. It's no longer the top in performance.

If I had to rank the oils readily found in order:

1. Pennzoil Ultra/Platinum
2. Valvoline Synpower
3. Castrol
4. Mobil 1.

AFE has some unique benefits as being the best oil for super cold weather, but everything else seems average.

Amsoil is still the best boutique brand.

Redline has some excellent, unique racing viscosities, but other than that I wouldn't use it.

So Mobil's poor performance in the TEOST, and Redline practically failing it, means nothing? That's just Amsoil PR? I don't think so.

Huh? I don't work for any oil company.

I think you're missing my point. I'm not saying Mobil 1 is a BAD oil, it's just not as dominant as it was.

This is due to the fact that 1. The industry has caught up and is making high end synthetics. 2. Mobil made M1 more of an average synthetic over the years and diluted the brand/performance.

I believe that is pretty accurate for the most part. Many of you believed this awhile ago. I put the IVA failure and move to Group III behind me, but after seeing PQIA's results, Pennzoil's IIIG claim and Amsoil's study, it's clear to me Mobil 1 is not what it used to be.


Geez after I finished up my Castrol Edge SM stash I went out and bought Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy. lol IMO Castrol clearly dropped the ball with the Edge change over from SM to SN in their line up. Oh well. As far as companies "studies", I take them as advertisements, always with a grain of salt. As always opinions vary.

Oh sure, just when I complete the switchover so that every one of our vehicles is running Mobil 1, now you tell me it's no good??

Seriously though, I would have continued to use Pennzoil Ultra (at least in the Corvette), but then Walmart stopped carrying it up here, and Canadian Tire never even started to carry it even though they initially were listed as a place to buy it (according to Pennzoil Canada's website back then) So I just thought, why not switch back to M1, which I know will be around forever and I'll never have supply issues. I could have switched back to PP, but I wanted to use the same brand in all three cars and I like the fact that I can run 0w40 in the Jetta and 0w20 in the Honda. Offhand I can't think of any other brand of oil commonly available that offers me a choice of 5w30 and 0w40 and 0w20 to run in our three cars.

Maybe I'm wrong. These are bench tests, and some of then not that important. Mobil does do a tremendous amount of engine testing in their labs and has a lot of R&D capability.

They are still using premium base oils too. I don't know.

As someone far more knowledgeable than I am on the subject pointed out to me, Mobil's R&D is really good. They have the lab ability and extensive resources to test in real engines and assure their oils are performing. Mobil tends not to participate in the numbers game. Also, Mobil's use of very good base oils does show a commitment to performance.

So maybe I'm off-base.

M1 could market a oil come in a price at 12 to 15 bucks a qt out bench test every thing then you all say what do I need that for regular M1 at 5 bucks a qt get's me 300,000 miles and never a problem in my engine it's all about trade off's price and performance.

That's what I'm wondering , I'm pretty sure it's a better oil then the standard M1 .

I agree with the notion that M1 hasn't slipped, but the other have improved to its level, and in come cases beyond.

M1 is a top-notch oil, I just don't like to use ExMo products for philosophical reasons.
