Your product loyalty is beginning to waver.

Personally, I think of it as Mobil perhaps resting a bit on their laurels. Their normal API/ILSAC offerings exceeded the specifications they claim by a good margin for a fairly long period of time. Things like dexos1 certification would have been a formality rather than much of an actual process.

They still offer extended OCIs, a warranty without too many bizarre loopholes, and have excellent availability.

As for my take on Mobil 1 oils. I use it because it works. I don't have to be concerned about lube related problems as long as I own the vehicle. It keeps my engines very clean for several 100K all at 10K OCIs. Most here skip between various oils which is fine for you, but you never seem to be content and always looking for something differant and always wondering how it will perform. That's not the way I roll. For me, I go to the store and buy Mobil 1 oil, drain out my 10K oil and put the new stuff in, run my engines for 10K and do it all over again. No worries, or hand wringing. With all of that said, I believe more oils today are great products as thay all have had to come UP to the Mobil 1 standard, as Mobil 1 still leads the way in synthetic oils.

I've just been very impressed with The Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5w40 in the M5 and I didn't think I would be. I swore I'd never run an oil that wasn't LL-01 in it, so this is still adhering to that mantra, but, well, the observations are going to wait for a few weeks but I think the shear resistance of this lubricant may be of significance in my application. I'll leave it at that for now.

It seems to me that Mobil 1 has been over shadowed a little by Pennzoils synthetic brands claiming to clean better than M1. Still though it may be considered to be a mch more common synthetic I consider it to be too expensive to be consider as such. I think a beter version over M1 would be the Kendall brand but since it not available in my area anymore thanks to PEP BOYS I'll still use M1. Now the PEAK brand is getting my attention more so that M1.

For what it's worth, I have also been a very consistent/constant user of Mobil 1 since 1977. I have also used Amsoil on occasion periodically since that time as well.

I have also conducted probably over 100 used oil analysis with Mobil 1 over the past 35+ years. I have used it in a variety of vehicles, most of which I took over the 100K mile mark.

I am also of the opinion that Mobil 1 no longer stands above the rest. I recently made the decision to cease using Mobil 1 engine oils.

The "final straw" for me was their formulation change with the SN version. I just do not believe it performs as well as it used to.

Like others, I still believe Mobil 1 is excellent, it just doesn't lead the pack anymore, as others have stated.

I can't prove this scientifically, or with as much certainty as I would like. But I simply do not have the resources to perform engine teardowns and precise measurements.

But I still have to make a decision as to which oil to use, based on whatever information I have available. Other brands I like are Amsoil's signature series. I have already started using it. I'm also rather impressed by what I've seen with Pennzoil's Ultra, but I cannot get it consistently.

A motor could run forever on any of those 3 oils. Fortunately,we don't have to get the absolute "best" oil to run a motor forever. I just try to select a good oil, relax, and enjoy the drive. Jmo.

No car I've had in the last 20 years went out of service because because the engine was shot, they went because everything else was shot.

You could have probably taken the engine out of most of them and used it on a water pump for another ten years.

A Motor gets its power from an outside source, an engine creates it own! Sorry, I am old school...or just old

I will find Mobil 1's answer to busters questions interesting when they finally respond to this report. Are ya listening Mobil?

Ok, enough about Mobil 1. What about the good things I've been reading about Mobil Super 5000? How about that?

I don't have a lot of experience with Mobil 1 that goes back years and years of use, so I can only report what I have noticed with the new versions of Mobil 1 vs. another oil. Our family has a farm, so we have a good amount of equipment and vehicles. In our Kubota tractors I was using Shell Rotella T6, then I tried Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40, and here is what I have noticed. All three tractors are running cooler than before. The T6 was used for a couple of years, and I keep close eye on engine temperatures in summer because I don't want them to overheat. After switching to Mobil, they are running cooler than before, even in the middle of summer. I know it is the oil because I changed nothing else, only the oil. Even my brother noticed, I didn't tell what I did, he used the mowing tractor and after using it a couple of times, he asked me, What did you do to the tractor? It doesn't seem to ever warm up. He was used to where the temperature gauge would raise up to when it was running using T6. There are other things as well, but I'll just mention this one. We have not had to open any of the tractors, so I don't know what Mobil may be doing to the engines internals, (I do shine a flashlight down the oil fill hole when I change the oil.) but if I had to judge based on how the tractors are running and how they sound, they seem to like Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck.

What's interesting here is how few of you guys actually run an oil out to a reasonable OCI. What is the fear of doing so? I just thought like myself and many friends and family, that BITOGERs would have the confidense in the oil they use to do at least 10K OCIs. In my world that's just normal. With M1 I don't give 10K a second thought. Where's the confidence in your oil if it's so good? How about doing 10K OCIs for the next 200-300K(Miles not KMs) in your engines then tell us about the results.

Here it does cost 12-15 a quart. Or I can buy jugs of pp for 24 bucks. Which am I walking out of the store with?
Now if M1 was the same price as pp then I might buy it,but its cost prohibitive in its current price range.
Looks like my engines will have to last forever with pennzoil.

I'm not a particular fan of XOM oils. Mostly because Mobil 1 Xw-30's tend to shear down in turbo subaru engines. The exception for my applications is the 0w-40. I have some now and will give it a go in a few more thousand miles. I've only been digging into oil info aggressively for a year or so, but the constant recommendations and specs this oil carries are impressive.

Up untill recently it was expensive to source locally for me. Now I can enjoy the $5/qt price from my Walmart. In fact it has become something of a price metric for me now. It's a known quality at a known price. If I can find another oil like GC on bogo, then it passes this metric. For my LGT I don't see a quality difference between Mobil 1, Pennzoil Ultra 10w30, T6 and GC/BC. Without sales Mobil 1 comes in the price winner. With choices like those I find no compelling reason to even consider oils like motul or amsoil. There's a wide field of very high quality lubricants to choose from, and Mobil 1 0w-40 is one of them.
