Those are chigger bites. This is the mating season for chiggers, and they like to have a snack during coitus. This explains the two-bite spacing.....

He said that the bites "come in pairs of two red punctures, each about 1mm in diameter and about 6 mm apart", so stop suggesting critters that don't leave a pair of bites, with each of the bites in the pair that far apart.

I'd call an entomologist at a college or university near you and ask him/her about it.
