Out of all the wrecks I have seen it seems that side impacts are the deadliest to the occupants of said vehicle regardless of the type of vehicle that hit them, is this the weakest part of a vehicle or is it because there is more metal in front of you and behind you in most cases, I know when I see a vehicle coming at me from the back way to fast it doesn't scare me as much as being t-boned, mainly because my loved ones riding with me.

You have it correct. The doors are the weakest points. anywhere from 2 thin steel sheets to an impact beam adds up to 3-4 inches of metal and plastic at most. Sure its designed to spread the impact to the pillars but it really is nothing compared to the front and rear sections.

I read that the side impact test really simulates getting hit by something like a small SUV, ~3000lbs and about the same height, going 30 mph.
Now everything is 4k+ and half are on stilts, with someone texting going 60mph, so I look both ways as I go on a green.

Our Highlander has side impact airbags, but our Camry does not, the Camry has been a phenomenal car too, but starting to feel outdated in the safety department, mainly the lack of side airbags.....We recently saw a Hyundai Accent that didn't look "that" bad struck by a suv (that ran a red light) on it's driver's door , the side airbags were deployed so we really couldn't see anything, I said to my girlfriend, "it doesn't look that bad" and she kind of just looked at me doubtingly , it turns out the lady driving the Hyundai was killed almost instantly. I guess it really doesn't take that much as there isn't much between your doors and you. stay safe fellow Bitogers.

Deadly, deadlier, deadliest. Kind of reminds me of when I went to buy touch-up paint and the clerk asked me "which black paint" I wanted? I replied "I'll take dark black."

personally witnessed a 2000 honda civic get broadsided by a drunk driving 2009~ ford escape at around 50mph, both people in the civic DOA.

Heck with that, I'm looking for a surplus M1 Abrams or similar with rubber treads, preferably with a remote controlled machine gun!

There's only so much accelleration your organs can take. If you're in an egg carton of airbags you still wind up going sideways in 1/1000 second.

If you want this experience in a head-on, get a smart car. Sure they have sturdy "passenger cells" but the decel's rapid.

Historically all safety devices were designed to protect occupants from either front or rear impact only--seat belts, bumpers, crumple zones, front air bags, even head rests.

Until side air bags came around there was *nothing* to protect people from side impacts.

This is why mass is king.

My 84 Honda has only one safety device, me. I've driven it for a lot of years and a lot of miles since new and have yet to scratch it. The only problem here is that if I get hit by one of these modern bloated highway cruisers driven by a distracted driver doing something far more important then paying attention that I'll be nothing more than Spam in a smashed can.

Some of these safety devices are making young drivers feel immortal and immune from the laws of physics. You can see it in the way they drive. They are isolated from reality and distracted. Last year a 16 year old female crossed over the center line into oncoming traffic while texting. The accident killed a mother and her infant daughter. The only thing the young female was interested in at the scene was getting her phone back from the police officer because she had not completed and sent her text message. The fact that she had just killed two people was not nearly as important as that text message.

What trim is your Camry? Mine is an LE and it has side airbags.

Watching crash videos of this model Camry, they don't seem to do so fantastic in crashes.

Mine is also an LE, it has ABS and daytime/auto headlamps, maybe it does have side bags? does yours have a decal denoting them? Speaking of that it seems like some 2000-2001 LEs have DRL lights and some do not, I am guessing the ones that have DRL also have automatic headlamps as well?

I am personally disgusted at the sight of idiotic drivers who think looking at the road is optional.

I was T-Boned by a lifted Chevy K3500 going 50mph in my old Lincoln Mark VIII. What saved me was the design of the body. In that car, I was sitting essentially directly next to the B-pillar (I'm tall), and the doors were 10 inches thick in some sections, and very structural, being a 2-door coupe with very long doors.

Being a unibody coupe, the B-Pillar was very strong as well.

I had small cuts from the glass (driver's window, and moonroof) shattering all over me, but was otherwise uninjured. My neck, knees, and elbows took their turns alternating between feeling fine, stiff, or hurting like an inglorious b###tard for 2 weeks. I was able to remove myself from the car before EMS arrived.

I was downright amazed at how much of an impact that shell took. That car had no side-impact airbags. It was just put together well, like my no-airbag BMW that allowed me to walk away uninjured from an accident that left the transmission rammed into the back seat.
