There's a 20w50 5 quart jug at walmart for $4.50.

Does it really work to mix? For example, if I buy some Mobil 1 0w20, can I make a 10w35 oil semi-syn oil?

No. Viscotiy would be someplace crazy, and the add packs would very likely interfere with each other, neither able to do it's job as they were designed to.

What is all this craziness

I would do it but I am a bit off my rocker when it comes to oil. I recently bought 4 QTS of Havoline 20w50 and used it as a substitute for the MMO I added. I only bought it because it was on sale for .95 a QT.

I used 5w20 when my subi specs 5w30. The franken mix was 1 QT of the 20w50, 1 QT of MMO and two QTS of 5w20. The subi loved it.

I use 20w50 in a 1996 Avalon because it will smoke at an idle with 5w30. A 15w40 will use about a quart in 2000 miles, but the 20w50 it stays at the full mark. No problems yet. No RX, MMO, etc helped. I just waisted my money. Now I just use the think oil.

I mix Delvac 1300 15w40 and Mobil 1 TDT 5W40 in a 50/50 blend to get a 10w40 for winter use in my diesel.

Next winter I am going to use about 2.5 qts of Mobil 0W40 and 5.5 qts Delvac to get that 10w40 a lower cost.

I'd use it for an OCI in the summer. It's not going to hurt anything on a 190k mile Hyundai - they spec 20W-50 for really hot temps!

If the engine is smoking and using oil because of worn parts, or bad or broken valve seals thick oil is your friend. MMO or A-Rx would be a waste of good money.

Maybe use QS 5W20 for thinning it out to keep concerns about different oil chemistry to a minimum. But honestly you could use just about anything. It might not be ideal, but the odds of trouble are quite small. I'd go for it.

Yes, I would since the manufacturer allows 20W-50 why not use it for short summer interval? I know for some members the best choice would be 5W-20 but since it is allowed, it will not be a problem
