The Battle of the EP Oils

Why do people get hung up on this slightly different naming convention? It's just the word their marketing department thought would work best for them, but it's the same category of oil.
Because they’re not the same. Valvoline EP is not a 20k oil like M1 EP is. Thats like saying a Dodge Ram is the same category as a Ferrari 488 because they both have 4 wheels and a driver.

Who was first to market extended protection oils out of Mobil, Castrol, Pennzoil and Valvoline(sort of)?

The "EP" or "Ultra" or "Ultimate" lines represent the best fornula these big companies can offer. My guess is they wanted to offer something to compete with the likes of Amsoil, Redline and the other boutiques. There are lots of guys out there who feel better knowing the best the oil companies can manufacture is in the engine.

Even Quaker State and SuperTech get into it as in people feel good knowing they have the best oil which can be offered for around $20 for 5 quarts.

After looking at Quaker State and SuperTech premium oils they are simply formulas loaded with more ingredients but the same base oil across their product lines. They work well as seen in many reports uploaded here...but they are simply the same oil offered with a more "stout" formula. They are not any kind of amazing chemical engineering.

Pennzoil on the other hand with its "Natural Gas" or "Gas to Liquid" tech remains a good bit of formula and is better than a formula simply loaded with more ingredients.

Let’s say the best oil at a price point most of us will consider.

I believe that price point is $30 for 5 quarts. I think the economy has gotten the best of the EPs and the price been lowered to sell...thats why you see them now at 29.99...

230,000 miles M1 EP 10W-30. 2003 Jaguar X-Type 2.5L. An engine known for wearing con rod bearings when inadequate oil is used.
I tried to get my phone to take a good pic, but it keeps changing lenses when up close and won't take the right image. By eyeball and flashlight one can clearly see around in there, and it's 100% perfect.

All of the various premium oils have come down in price to under $30 for 5 quarts on Amazon and at Walmart.

Im looking and wondering what is your favorite...

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum
Mobil 1 EP
Valvoline EP
Castrol Edge EP

I wont include budget friendly SuperTech Advanced and Quaker State UP. Only the higher budget oils. The oil must be sold by Walmart and Amazon for this comparison.
I have used Mobil1 EP oil and filters for almost 20 years. i believe in it protecting your engine for hundreds of thousands of miles.

Somewhat similar to you, I'm a firm believer in severe service OCIs and using top-tier oils to dramatically lengthen the lifetime of Hyunkia TGDI / GDI engines destined to die prematurely in their middle age. I'm sure you heard from the same bozos that swear that our engines won't live thousands of miles longer than theirs, which are now long-time recycled at junk yards around America.

He who laughs last, gets the first laugh after the guy who laughed before him. And if he laughed that time, then imagine how good the laugh will be when you laugh last, long-long after the bozo's original first laugh.

Valvoline has no long drain oils in the line up (EP name is misleading) .

It appears Castrol Edge EP uses 3% DMSO to keep those engines super-clean. Need to be careful and keep the oil residue from touching your car’s paint. I am avoiding Castrol Edge EP because of this.

Are other manufacturers also using DMSO to meet Dexos1 Gen3 spec?

Do you really splish and splash that much whilst changing your vehicles’ oil?

Haha not really. But oil does get on the gloves and the gloves can touch the car. I guess Castrol wouldn’t use it if it wasn’t thought to be safe for engines. But DMSO use would make me think as if I were doing an engine cleanse/flush treatment every time. When I think of DMSO, I think of it as an engine flush. The alternative additive packages from the competitors may be just as harsh (or gentle).
