The Battle of the EP Oils

It appears Castrol Edge EP uses 3% DMSO to keep those engines super-clean. Need to be careful and keep the oil residue from touching your car’s paint. I am avoiding Castrol Edge EP because of this.

Are other manufacturers also using DMSO to meet Dexos1 Gen3 spec?
Method IP 346 uses DMSO. The SDS is not saying that the base oil has DMSO in it.

Haha not really. But oil does get on the gloves and the gloves can touch the car. I guess Castrol wouldn’t use it if it wasn’t thought to be safe for engines. But DMSO use would make me think as if I were doing an engine cleanse/flush treatment every time. When I think of DMSO, I think of it as an engine flush. The alternative additive packages from the competitors may be just as harsh (or gentle).
Sounds like someone has been spending time on the Internet, and not understanding what you’re reading.

You’re correct. I reread the SDS, and I did not understand what I was reading. It’s IP 346 DMSO extract < 3%, and apparently, a value of less than 3% on this test is what is needed on the test to not classify the petroleum product as a carcinogen.
