Havoline. Since taking up a job with the Shell lube joint I have found that only the gear oils, bottled oil, rotella bulk and most filters are Shell. The other filters are Purolators, the antifreeze is Texaco branded. The transmission fluid is some crazy name like the good stuff or something along those lines.

The prices are crazy, how can one justify a synthetic oil change for 70 bucks.

This has to do with residual licensing agreements that survived the acquisition of the Havoline brand from Shell by ChevronTexaco.

I just re-read your post. The residual licensing ended in 2006 and only pertained to Texaco branded products at Texaco branded locations. I would suspect that where you are working used to be a Texaco Xpress Lube and they changed it to Shell but are still using some of the Havoline bulk oil they had in stock.

Yep most of the people that roll through are to good to get dirty or they at least think that.

My favorite thing is Can you reset my oil change light? and I wanna say yes and so can you thats what an owners manual has in it.

Which is sometimes quite suspect itself.
Bulk Havoline Oil?

Havoline that was made by SOPUS isn't going to look anything like current Havoline in a UOA.

My sister and I just paid $45 (including tax) for a MaxLife oil change in her firebird. I would've done it myself but it's lowered and doesn't fit on my ramps or my jack. Yikes!

Down here, M1 0W-40 is $86 for 5 litres (a change in most vehicles, but 2/3 in my diesel)...that's $74US, just for the oil.

I just couldn't resist, sorry, but Rlc2500HD, aren't we supposed to be glad for those folks? If everyone did their own "stuff", they wouldn't NEED the garage you work in. Besides, folks like that were so busy their whole lives becoming the types of folks that don't know how to turn a wrench, you know, Doctors, Lawyers, and in general, the type of folks who are made of MONEY, that they just don't have time or inclination to do an OCI.

I know I'm happy enough that they don't fix their own PCs and hang their own plasma screens and build their own theaters, and if I was you, I'd be happy they ain't self-oilers. Remember, the money we service folks make doesn't fall out of the sky, it comes from the folks that have so much dough they prefer to share it out with us to do the little things.

Divisions of labor and free enterprise are beautiful things.

You may now return to your regularly-scheduled disdain for the filthy-rich, Rlc2500HD.

Just remember that the doctor you bash today for not doing an oil change him/herself is the doctor that performs brain surgery on you when some moron runs a red and hits you going 90, that that overpaid lawyer is the one winning your case sueing the ---- outta the jerk who did it.

I'm sure the synthetic oil changes are more expensive because it is more difficult to pour from the bottle. It flows better so it probably takes a couple of guys to keep an eye on the process.

In all seriousness, I have the oil changed in my Mazdaspeed 3 at the dealer. This past change I supplied my own oil and when I subtracted the price of the filter the labor was under $20. I'll spend more than $20 of my time changing the oil on that car. You have to consider the cost of changing oil at home when determining an expensive place, if you bring in your own oil and filter then you know what the labor alone costs. Some places will only give a token discount for bringing in your own oil, but the dealerships that I have used don't charge at all for anything that I brought in. In fact, a Toyota dealership told me it was cheaper for me to get a filter in the parts department and hand it to them rather than purchasing through the service department, go figture.

How do you figure? Take 5 quarts of M1 is about $30. A good filter may be another $10. That leaves $39 for the labor. Not as cheap as JL, but I wouldn't exactly call them crooks either.

A synthetic oil change at my indy shop costs about $95 for my car:

$42 for 7 quarts of oil
$10 for OEM Mann filter
$43 for half hour of labor

It is what it is. You can always just do it yourself. I do it myself, too; not because I think they're crooks but mostly because I like to do it.

A couple points. How do you reset the "light" on a 1996 Volvo 850?

You charge $79 for an oil change and people have to ask to have the oil change light/indicator reset? NICE customer service.
