What's the object of your pronoun, here? The Tough Guard? If so, it doesn't compete with the syn media filters like the Ultra, RP, PSL, etc. They can go much longer OCIs in dirtier engines, and are a lot more consistently constructed (wire-backed media pleats), can hold much more total contamination without restriction/bypass events, etc.

Filtration when new out-of-the-box is one thing, lasting 10k+ miles or use with high-flow oil pumps, high-pressure oiling systems, and so on is another matter.

Yes I was referencing the tough guard. Thanks

No.

The Purolator Synthetic is equivalent to Bosch Long Life. Part number starting with L, silver can. They only seem to be available on Amazon, and they're priced high, too. Example part numbers include L4322, L3425, L3330. guaranteed to 10k just like the Puro Synthetic (because it is a Puro Synthetic)

The D+ is much better than the above.

In order of how good they are (performance)

1. Fram Ultra
2. Royal Purp tied with Amsoil EA
3. Fram ToughGaurd tied with Mobil 1 Extended Performance tied with Bosch Premium
4. Wix tied with Napa Gold
5. Any other paper filters.

Your list is fine.

Fram Ultra 99%+ efficient at 20 microns and 80% @5 microns
Amsoil and Royal Purple both 98.7% @20 microns
Fram Tough Guard 99% efficient at 20 microns
Wix/Napa Gold /Fram extended guard all 95% @20 microns
Mobil 1 filters posted a 25 micron rating previously almost identical to Fram extra guard leading to believe it's also 95% @20 microns but not certain at this time, the data sheet is from 2007

Although I hope you're referring to the Bosch Distance plus because the Bosch premium is a PureOne clone.

Fram Tough Guard is 99% at 20 microns?

Yes

Hate to be too petty but there's no published data that says fu is 80% at 5 microns

Yes I know because there's no industry standard to post 5 micron efficiency. Fram gave us this information because they know we are interested in it. I don't think they'd lie about it at this point but anything is possible.

Define way overpriced I will agree they cost about four dollars more but you can have them at your front door step for free. I do run RP filters in most applications that I can and cut many open built like a tank and flawless inside.

Can't help it I'm a fan of quality products at bargain prices.

http://www.amazon.com/Fram-XG2-Ultra-Spin-On-Filter/dp/B000C2ZKG0

$5.86 if you subscribe and save. 15,000 miles, 99%+ efficiency. Find a better rated filter that can do 0.39 cents per 1k mile and I'll buy it no matter what name is stuck on the can.

This is a current on sale item, I was getting my specific application filter for $5.80 without even using subscribe and save before the price went up.

Overpriced because for more money you get almost no extra benefits. Define one tangible benefit over the Ultra.

better cold starts at-10F and below on my 4.0L Tacoma. Yes had run many ultras on it and recommend them many times till I ran a RP filter. 5 10 20 bucks extra to me is a joke I use to pay that for a single bottle of 12 oz high end beer.

Doubt if it was the Fram Ultra's fault it was cold, and running an RP oil filter doesn't change a thing for cold start performance. Sorry, just the truth. UNLESS you're claiming the Ultra's silicon ADBV was leaking too much on those days, thats the only way I can guess you might see a difference, as flow is about the same from a media standpoint.
I do agree that RPs are sturdy. They filter nearly as good as an Ultra, almost.

Ok I'm a liar do you know how a 4.0L mounts yes that's what I am claiming how many -10F starts you have on a 4.0L

I already pointed out a couple, and I already pointed out that they might not be a factor for most applications. I'll add that the ADBV and gasket materials *may* be slightly different, and not just in color. It might be entirely true that the RP is less prone to drain-back at very, very low temps for that reason, but I don't know (its not a criteria AT ALL for me, living in central Texas!)

Fan-ism doesn't enter into it (they're made by the same farquin' company anyway!) The Ultra is a great product and I use it myself. But I tend toward the RP on my old Big-Blocks where the filter is mounted very low and points straight at oncoming road debris. The fact that its only $3-4 more means I'll also pick an RP off the shelf if the XG equivalent isn't there, rather than making another trip or placing an Amazon order.

RP has:
Thicker can - no advantage in real life
Metal ADBV - no known advantage
Single layer synthetic media - worse filtering and no proof of higher flow.

All this and more cost.
Oh, I forgot the purple paint.

Except for when it does have an advantage in real life... as I said, not for everyone but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Arguing that a filter is better because of price point alone applies only to the purchaser. The same way a person might think a Toyota Camry is better than a Mercedes because of price, Fauken tires better than Michelin, or Harbor Freight tools better than Craftsman, etc.

I've never said one is "better."
Period. That's sorta the whole point.

I've just enumerated the strengths of each.

???

I know this was not you, but my comment was valid.

Fram Ultra is an inexpensive filter that is not put together as well as the Amsoil or Royal Purple filters.

This is certainly a rare occurrence. Did the guy check the filter before installation though? Makes one wonder.. does not it?

Not sure that is a real failure, unless the bypass valve seal was compromised, but it does show Fram Ultra isn't as well put together as the Amsoil & RP filters.
