I just want to say that isn't true. People can be wrong, make a mistake, or promise something that doesn't work out, and it doesn't mean they are lying. The guy on the phone was likely wrong as the M1 has metal end caps and is a Champ design, while the TG uses fiber caps and is a Fram design.

I said "filter media", for performance. Some of the cartridge filters are identical, and yes there still may be some differences in can design after 3 years of factory consolidation in the Rank Group, now owning both Champion and Fram

5. Any other paper filters.

I don't agree with most filter ordered, but I agree with Fram Ultra as the best spin-on oil filter for less than $10-12.

I ordered it by filtering performance. Cleaning the oil. What do you go by?

Fram Ultra, RP, and Amsoil are all made by one division or the other of "Fram Filtration." But when you cut into them, the Fram still has the pre-merger Fram plastic bypass valve, whereas the other two have the pre-merger Champion Labs metal bypass button valve. Small detail, but it would seem to indicate that the two product lines haven't completely merged yet.

I'd use an M1 before a Wix XP, but only if I could get it at a Wix Standard or Fram TG price. Its over-priced for what it is.

Believe RP has the same media Champ Labs uses for the Donaldson Endurance & Luberfiner Imperial XL lines of filters, slightly different from the Ultra-the RP media is definitely superior to the Mobil 1, not sure if Mobil 1 & Tough Guards might have the same media-but Mobil 1 filters definitely have the metal endcaps, engineered fiber for the TG.

While I know the 'published specs' for the Wix XP (and it's Napa Platinum twin) aren't the greatest....I just can't see Wix knowingly making it's top of the line filter inferior to other t-o-t-l filters. I bought some of them when Napa had them for $7.50 each and I will use them without worries.

Okay. Thanks. A list like that is exactly what I am fishing for.

I guess what throws me off is that we say these are constructed to a certain price point yet the lowest price point is the leader in this situation. Fram Ultra is several dollars less than the rest.

Be careful of lists that aren't backed by data.

In order of how good they are by performance?

What exactly does that mean?

Filtration percentage, flow, both?

In actuality it means nothing.

This particular forum doesn't have a great reputation, two years ago many here touted Puralator 1 as the best filter, they were cheap at Walmart, even proclaiming that using one for a single oil change was a waste. Many were going 2 OCIs on a single filter.

When I questioned the logic of not replacing a filter that was only $5, I was told person x, y, & z have been running a couple of years with Puralators that went 2 OCIs, and their cars were still running good.

At the same time they were bad mouthing Fram.

Then Puralators that were opened after use were being found to have media tears on inspection.

Now Puralators are referred to as Tearalators, and Fram Ultra is the go to filter.

The bottom line don't believe any claims that aren't backed by manufacturer data, and especially forget BIOG unsubstantiated claims.

This forum needs to clean up its act, all too often for every good bit of information, there is bad to match.

Each person should make up their own mind based on fact, real facts.

Facts are there. I'm using ISO 4548-12 results for the list, so thats filtration percentage and dirt capacity before clogging. Look that stuff up for yourself, or check this forum where people have looked it up time and time again. Trust me.
------------About "flow", any oil filter built by engineers with half-a-brain will have enough "flow", meaning low enough pressure drop, so not to worry about that, you won't be without flow.

I think someone could vary from my list based on other factors yes. Like Royal Purple seems to have very strong metal can construction. Some build differences that I don't think amount to much.

I'm NOT saying you can't use any other oil filter, but paper media oil filters tend to be worse performing, but they do well enough for most people. Good enough ain't the same as 'best'.

I think if you want to be of real help, post the applicable links. Otherwise your list is just your opinion. That's where the trouble starts, people post opinions as fact that are incorrect.

If its too much trouble to post the links, maybe its better if you keep your opinion to yourself. Or state that its your opinion based on recollection.

When I post responses to questions I try to post links that support my response. Saying you can search for yourself is of little value. The OP could have just done a search to start with.

He was obviously hoping to cut to the chase for factual information.

That's another issue, Wix themselves will tell you if you call their tech line that the Napa Gold/Wix is their top tier filter while the Wix XP is a specialty filter.

Your list is fine.

Fram Ultra 99%+ efficient at 20 microns and 80% @5 microns
Amsoil and Royal Purple both 98.7% @20 microns
Fram Tough Guard 99% efficient at 20 microns
Wix/Napa Gold /Fram extended guard all 95% @20 microns
Mobil 1 filters posted a 25 micron rating previously almost identical to Fram extra guard leading to believe it's also 95% @20 microns but not certain at this time, the data sheet is from 2007

Although I hope you're referring to the Bosch Distance plus because the Bosch premium is a PureOne clone.

Thank you.

He posted the ISO test, therefore he's listed his reference material. If you want details, google the ISO test number and a filter brand, up pops a product data sheet. Your claim that he's just posting opinion is itself just opinion.

M1 should have a better media than tough guard since it advertises 15k foci but who knows.

My how the times have changed! Wasn't long ago that anything FRAM raised the hair on the backs necks.

Hate to be too petty but there's no published data that says fu is 80% at 5 microns

Fram Tough Guard is 99% at 20 microns?

What's the object of your pronoun, here? The Tough Guard? If so, it doesn't compete with the syn media filters like the Ultra, RP, PSL, etc. They can go much longer OCIs in dirtier engines, and are a lot more consistently constructed (wire-backed media pleats), can hold much more total contamination without restriction/bypass events, etc.

Filtration when new out-of-the-box is one thing, lasting 10k+ miles or use with high-flow oil pumps, high-pressure oiling systems, and so on is another matter.

Would the Bosch D+ be equal to the Purolator Synthetic, then?

Just wondering.
