That or it was dropped and the spring dislodged, which could happen to most any filter.

Pure hogwash.

The construction of the Royal Purple canister as being superior to Ultra is factual from what I am reading here and that makes me lean toward using the RP filter. Yes I give up some modicum of filtration but I appreciate the construction of the canister enough to make the decision one in which it's a clear personal choice that can't be argued with.

Royal Purple makes a "tank" when it comes to the construction of their filters and it's worth the extra couple of dollars to me to reward them with my business.

It's a simple philosophy... Reward companies who go the extra mile to make a well constructed product. In this case, the durned thing is a "tank".

I think you made a good choice. The difference in filtration is insignificant. You'll still make it to 200k regardless of what filter you use. Keep an eye out for the occasional RP sale at Pep Boys.

How many times have you had a filter get a hole in the can?
I know that I never had.
If I did a lot of offroading or rock climbing I might use one but if not then no.

From what I've gathered from talking to Amsoil's Product Specialist, Filtration/Aftermarket, and from what I've seen construction wise, the Amsoil EaO was manufactured by Donaldson or WIX and the media was proprietary Donaldson "Synteq" nano-fiber media that filtered 98.7% efficient at 15 microns absolute. When Amsoil shifted manufacturers to Champion labs, the Donaldson Syntec media was out-the-door and the efficiency rating dropped to 98.7% efficient at 20 microns absolute.

As far as I know, Champ/Fram/Rank filters use their own synthetic media and not Donaldson "Synteq" nano-fiber media. Currently, the only way I know of to get a Donaldson Synteq media oil filter in automotive applications is if you're lucky enough to have an application that fits the PH8A sized Donaldson P169071.

Good tip, thanks!

Construction is the exact same as the AMSOIL EaO FYI. RP doesn't "make" the filters, they are manufactured by Champion Labs (same parent company as FRAM) for Royal Purple, AMSOIL, Mobil....etc.

Now THAT explains why the EaO's, when I cut them apart, have different textured media than the Donaldson filters I've purchased (P169071). I've never had an old-style EaO.

Fram Ultra's double-layer synthetic media is different from and better than the RP's white media. I doubt a Synteq media oil filter would beat a Fram Ultra media.

Don't make that bet*

*This has been discussed before, Donaldson makes some insanely efficient versions of their synteq media.

Show me a filter media that is better than 80% at 5 microns, with the high dirt loading capacity of a Fram Ultra, and I'll change brands. I'm not brand loyal, only performance loyal. For example, I was a Cleveland Cavaliers fan until they lost the championship to Golden State, just saying....
....And MicroGreen oil filters don't count, they cheat and put in a 2 micron filter in there. Not fair.

I can show you the media but you won't be able to run the filters. Donaldson primarily makes filters for OTR trucks, mining equipment....etc. Their selection of car filters is tiny and the only ones that get the Synteq media are the Ford and GM small blocks IIRC.

I'm not even sure you could rig up a filter head that accepts an ELF to your engine TBH. And the size of the filters would probably be a problem for your oil pump

http://www.donaldson.com/en/engine/support/datalibrary/070617.pdf

Start on page 19.

Synteq - 99% @ 16 microns

Then page 30, which is for Cummins applications, Synteq ELF7900 filter is 99% @ 15 microns.

Most of their newer literature for the Synteq stuff just lists >90% @ 10 microns.

Please provide the official Fram link providing data or even claiming such efficiency? Otherwise its just hearsay from someone who has posted on an internet message board. I'm a hard [censored] when it comes to unsubstantiated claims. This place would be better without them, since they're little more than an opinion without an official release making the claim from the manufacturer.

So Fram spokesman is lying in a public forum?

Joenpb, I believed the Motorking (Jay) post. He seems reputable. You can choose not to. Their published Ultra spec is 99%+ at 20 microns, and the fact that they use a thick, depth-filtering, dual layer of synthetics means its very possible the 80% at 5 microns 4548-12 result is true.

This is a nice document that covers efficiency (99% @ 15 microns) as well as capacity, which is 40% higher than the Fleetguard filter. Oh, and this is also at 150lpm. It also has 33% less restriction than the factory Fleetguard.

Last page shows their Synteq media in fuel filters, which are 99% @ 4 microns.

As I said though, it doesn't matter, as they don't make many passenger car filters.

The Amsoil and royal purple media achieves about the same thing as the Ultra. It's one thicker layer of micro glass media instead of the Ultras two layers of media. Between the 98.7 or 99.5 % @20 microns figures it's not a big difference. I am sure that the Amsoil and royal purple do pretty well at 5 microns too.

The Ultra is advertised as 99% @ >20 microns, not 99.5%

I hear you guys about Motorking (Jay), but who's to say he's who he claims to be? The internet is full of fraud, perhaps his claims are true, I'd still feel a lot better about it if i could see it on Fram's website. Without that, it doesn't feel or seem "absolute" to me.
