If I'm willing to pay the extra few dollars for this filter, can I go wrong with the product? Does anyone know who makes these for Royal Purple? I already pay 10 dollars for Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter but have reservations since it's made by Champion Labs. Thanks

Royal Purple Oil Filter

The other option is a WIX EP. Unfortunately Wix doesn't give much information about it's filter and so I don't know if it would fit for an extended drain interval.

Most large manufacturing companies can make products at varying levels of quality. Each at a different price point.

I would not worry about a large filter manufacturer like Champ Labs.

I would keep with a M1.

Does the s2000 Honda service replacement (filtech) fit on your civic? I'd use that. I even use it for my Rogue since nissan filters R knott 2 guuud.

Thanks for the replies. I read the other thread over.... where does the WIX EP fall into this? Better? About the same?

No, nothing wrong with the Royal Purple filter

The RP filter is very similar, if not identical, to the Mobil 1 filter, both being made by Fram/Champion. K&N used to be like these, too, but K&N decided to be cheap and outsource to Mexico but without passing on the savings.

Carquest Blue is most likely one of these high-end Frampions, too, since that company is now supplying CQ house brand filters (they switched suppliers during the AAP takeover). However, CQ still uses a modified version of the Wix numbering system. For you, CQ part number 84356.

On the site filtersandwipers.com they have a Castrol-brand oil filter with a really cool green paint job. It is another Mobil 1/RP clone.

If you can get Wix XP cheaper, I'd use that. Sometimes Napa has them on sale, too. Napa Platinum is Wix XP. Part number 47356

Someone else already mentioned Fram Ultra, also a good choice, and different in construction than the other high-end Fram-made filters above (Mobil 1, RP, etc). They are NOT the same as Mobil 1/RP, but they are just as good. You can also get a bulk case on eBay; look for Fram FPS7317.

And remember, Champion Labs, like all filter manufacturers, makes filters to a price point, and to their customers' specifications. They make cheap filters like Ecores and Extra Guards to compete on price, all the way up to high end filters that are world class and priced accordingly. They also make OEM filters for Honda.

So the best of my choices would be the Wix filter if I can get it reasonably? It runs about 12.50. So a couple dollars more than the M1 XP and a 1.50 more than the Royal Purple.

In order of how good they are (performance)

1. Fram Ultra
2. Royal Purp tied with Amsoil EA
3. Fram ToughGaurd tied with Mobil 1 Extended Performance tied with Bosch Premium
4. Wix tied with Napa Gold
5. Any other paper filters.

Oh boy....here we go!!

All these filters are great. Some people don't like the published efficiency spec of the Wix synthetic filter (XP). Others don't care.

People on here will stand in a long line to praise (sorry, I had to be nice) Fram Ultras. They are the filters that most on here love. They are indeed, a greater filter.

Your car won't know the difference between the RP, M1, or Wix. Use whatever you want. Try them all. It's no big deal.

Personally, I run a Napa Gold on my old truck (it's a Wix filter) and I run the Napa Platinum (Wix XP) on my Honda and Subaru....and just change them every other oil change. So each Napa Platinum sees about 12-15k miles before they are changed.

Just watch your pricing. It's really hard to say. For my F-150, the Wix is $4.99, and that's going to beat just about everything on the market on price, including just about anything I'll find at Walmart Canada or Canadian Tire, and bang for the buck, there will be no comparison.

However, if the Wix for my application were $12.50, I could probably get, on special, an M1 or Fram Ultra for cheaper than that, and I'd consider that route.

Okay. Thanks. A list like that is exactly what I am fishing for.

I guess what throws me off is that we say these are constructed to a certain price point yet the lowest price point is the leader in this situation. Fram Ultra is several dollars less than the rest.

The Royal Purple has a few advantages over the Fram, so its not 100% fair to say the Fram is the "leader." The RP has got a thicker shell and baseplate, so its burst strength is probably higher (though both are off the chart- it shouldn't be an issue). But that also means that if you have a low-hanging filter, the RP could take a bigger hit from road debris without damage.

The RP filter is all metal apart from gaskets and media, whereas the Ultra has the same plastic bypass valve (dome-end versions anyway) as all other Fram filters. I've never heard of the Fram bypass valve failing, so its at most a 2nd-order consideration. You decide if its worth the extra.

The RP media is single-layer, which may translate to a little better flow and the penalty in efficiency (if any) is miniscule.

In my opinion, there's not much real-world difference between the Fram Ultra, Royal Purple, Amsoil EAO, and Purolator Synthetic (PSL series).

Wix XP seems to be an outlier in filter efficincy, or it would be on the list. Are they being more "honest" in their ratings than the other 4? Or do they see an engineering trade that favors low efficiency? We just don't know, but for now I leave them a notch below the others.

EVERYTHING else- from M1 near the top all the way down to the basic Fram- is significantly inferior to the wire-backed media synthetic media filters. Again, just my opinion. M1, good thought it is, needs to up their media to full synthetic if they're going to try to play at their current price point- I think they're the worst bang for the dollar right now.

I've noticed Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter are way overpriced for what you get. Paying for that M1 name on the label, and it really made by Champion the same as Fram Toughguard with the same filter media! ... I typically get oil filters from amazon.com, walmart.com, or rockauto.com for cheap. Fram tends to be a bargain due to their volume, the biggest. Wix and napaGolds are competitively priced sometimes, depending on the application. I'd definitely compare stuff at RockAuto.com for your application. My ranking just goes by filtration efficiency (how small particles they get) combined with dirt holding capacity before clogging. Ultra seems to always be on top due to double layer synthetic media. Also, MicroGreenFilter.com is a special filter that gets extra-tiny particles out of the oil, worth a look if you want something special-different.

Really? And you know this how?

The Wix XP is the worst microglass synthetic filter by specifications. The top three are Fram Ultra, Amsoil, Royal Purple all made by Champion labs.

I would use the Mobil 1 filter before I went searching for a Wix XP.

Made by Champion labs in the same factory,
same glass-paper blend media,
same 4548-12 specs,
techline phone person told me a while back they don't even change media paper when switching over the line from one to the other.
If its not the same, the techline guy is lying (possible), and the same factory is just a coincidence, same peformance specs are just a coincidence, same look and feel on the cartridge oil filters are just a coincidence.

"If its not the same, the techline guy is lying (possible)"

I just want to say that isn't true. People can be wrong, make a mistake, or promise something that doesn't work out, and it doesn't mean they are lying. The guy on the phone was likely wrong as the M1 has metal end caps and is a Champ design, while the TG uses fiber caps and is a Fram design.

I don't agree with most filter ordered, but I agree with Fram Ultra as the best spin-on oil filter for less than $10-12.
