Relevance of changing the oil filter every OCI

My 2021 HRV is the first AWD I have owned so it does require the rear Dif. fluid to be changed also..

Same as my Ridgeline.

Thats either VTM4 or Dual Pump II Fluid. (boy is that fun thread)

Not sure if they function the same, but if so its a super AWD system, right up there with the audis and haldexes.

On my TDI Jetta I change the oil every 5,000 miles and the filter every 10,000 miles. Criticize all you want but at almost 17 years old with 306,000 miles on the clock, the engine still does not use any oil.

It is not just the cost of the filter, about $10 or so, it is the work and mess of replacing it.

On my new Mach E, the dealer told me I get free lifetime oil changes.* Can't pass that up. You can be sure it will get a new oil filter with every oil change.

*He really did, when I asked if it would come with a full tank of gas.

Duel pump and I will stick to Honda OEM fluid for that....

Honestly? I'd question the relevance of the question.
What's a proper Mann filter purchased in France, less than 10 €?
.
Relevance given the conditions.

I used to change my oil+filter with synthetic every 5,000 km until not long ago. I know it's a cheap insurance and it's not a matter of paying 10 or 15€ extra, it's just that it seems pointless in my case and i find UncleDave's point of view interesting on this one.

Congrats on the new Mach E, thats a pretty cool short. I want to see Ford do well here.

Please start a thread in the electric forum! Did Ford Gouge you with ADM?

Ctiticize? You saved tons of TIME and some money by doing what you did and the results speak for themself if true.
You are getting seriously sweet dollars per mile payback from that setup.

Back when many were on the "train" of 3k or 5k OCI's...... using a filter twice seemed to make sense.

Now with people pushing to 10k, 15k and 20k OCI's ..... I don't think it is wise to use a filter twice.

..........

5000 km is an extremely short of a distance. Which span of time?
With MB229.5 oil and a Mann filter you can easily do 10.000 km
or even 15.000 km and 12 months without taking any risk.
.

Didn't realize that, let's hope i haven't started the third world war.
Nah, discussions about "thick vs thin" oil, and does filter efficiency matter are more apt to derail and start wars, but using an oil filter twice is in 3rd place.

5,000 km was done over 3 months. 15,000 is still a big step for me and my OCD but 10,000 is ok, that's why i was thinking about changing the oil filter every 20,000 since they are rated for this mileage.

Fresh oil, fresh filter, this was taught by my Auto Mech. teacher in high school, been following this for the last 50+ years. :D

Yeah - our Ford Fusion Hybrid had a dinner table under it - but ran oil/filter 10K OCI …
My daughter's new Mazda also has a 'dinner table' (LOL at that) but Mazda was kind enough to make a small removable (2 Phillip head screws) access panel which gives access to both the drain plug and filter...making oil changes a breeze. Apparently, Ford wants you to take it to the dealer for OC's...which I won't do...

All preference really. I do change oil without the filter, but never let the filter go past a year.

I guess the correct answer would be do a long drain oil with some analysis and change the filter after that.
IMHO. The correct answer is like the old glass half full / glass half empty. I realized as I get older I feel different sometimes about stuff I was sworn to or against. I guess we get more tolerant. I can say for sure folk's attitude will change about things when you face you can not do things for yourself any more. 😳 Wife clamped down on me a few years back and put a STOP to my lawn work. She said she could not take seeing me bent over crawling around in pain for 3-4 days after each time I did my lawn work. That was one of the hardest things to do in my life. Admit I had to hire someone to do MY OWN yard work. Sorry. Another Short Story book edition....

I guess this is a side thought but humour me ...I change CVT fluid every 10-20k and the filters at 75k. Now I know this is a tranny and not motor...but aren't they both doing essentially a similar task? Is that a waste? Most people will change both but I'm guilty of being 60 percent of the way through a oci and just rotated the tires and replaced the oil only because of the mess, my discs in my back and usually only do this when it's cold out but we get a day where it's decent out to do it. Far too often I see more people not prefilling oil filters before installing. That in my opinion is far more damaging than using an oil filter for an interval longer than some would do. A quality oil filter will last a long time if the driving pattern is suitable, the air filter is good and properly sealed and good oil/fuel being used. Let's say half a quart doesn't get drained because we keep the filter on for a bit longer..no worries about dry start. In my heart of hearts I believe filters struggle more with sludgy internals or filtration and leaks that allow dirt and moisture.

I don't have a problem with changing the oil filter every other oil change. As noted, Honda recommends it, as does Kohler for the engine in my mower.

I think as long as the engine is in good shape and has good air filtration, the oil filter should have plenty of capacity to hold more dirt.

And, I think there may some benefit. First, the engine will immediately have oil pressure (not having to fill up an empty filter) and as filter's age they tend to filter out progressively finer particles.

I would defer to Owner's Manual and application. No matter our opinions. We need to be environmentally sound. "Leave No Trace."

I use synthetic oil filters for a couple cycles of motor oil changes! Good luck OP!~

I believe it was Honda that had a filter change every 2x. Perhaps they still do? Doing this isn’t wrong.

Depending on the filter size, there’s likely more old oil left behind in the engine with a filter change than what’s left in the filter if it’s left on.

If it’s rated for the distance, I see no reason not to reuse. Also if you’re doing short OCI’s on say a DI car, changing every 2x or change makes things easier, cleaner, and cheaper.
