Regular vs Premium Gas Pricing

$1 spread around here... 2 of my vehicles recommend 89 so that's what they get and it's 50 cents more than 87. If it's more than that I'll just go to another station that isn't playing those games.

Minimum $1 spread here but commonly closer to $1.50. I usually fill up with Shell or Sonoco and like the idea of Shell's Nitro-Power or Sonoco's Ultra 93 for the extra "cleaning power" additives they claim. Hard time justifying an extra $20-25 per fill up though.

A PEA cleaner like Redline SL-1, Gumout w/Regane or BG's 44K will do the trick for cheaper I guess.

I do miss the days where every grade was 10 cents from one another. I also miss the smell of ethanol free 93 octane too!

I am from Jersey and the Sunoco near me now offers 94 Octane as Ultra and it's $1 difference from 87. No Shell near me though.

The typical spread here is over a dollar between 87 and 93. My Corvette takes 93. There is a Mobil station in this area adjacent to a local supermarket. Its spread is only 30 cents, and its the cheapest 93 in a 50 mile radius.

When I started driving in 1964 in northern NJ, regular was 30 cents a gallon, premium was 34 cents a gallon. But minimum wage that I was earning was $1.50 an hour. I remember buying discounted Hess premium for 32 cents a gallon :)

On weekend trip to my niece's wedding, filled up with premium for the first time in forever at less than $3 a gallon at Buc-ee's in Pass Christian, MS. It was $2.99.9. I don't remember exactly what the price of 87 was, but I'm thinking $2.39.9.

I always like these comparisons. Here is the 2025 equivalent of those 1964 dollar values.
CPI inflation calculator - Bureau of Labor Statistics

Gas: $0.30/gal in 1964 = $3.15/gal in 2025
Wage: $1.50/hr in 1964 = $15.77/hr in 2025

Perfect example of how wage growth hasn't kept up with the cost of goods over the years.

Noticed a 50c difference per liter yesterday.
That’s what really makes me mad! That’s 1.89 per US gallon difference! I don’t think any station in the USA charges that much more for premium so why do Canadian gas stations think they can justify that spread? It wasn’t that long ago that Costco only charged 10 cents more and even the major brands were not higher than 25 cents more.

Filled at Costco this week. .37 between 87 octane and 92 octane. Gonna start getting my premium fuel here from now on even though I'd rather use BP fuel. 2.88 per gallon vs. 3.25 per gallon.

Local BP station is always .90 between 87 octane and 93 octane. 2.81 per gallon vs. 3.71 per gallon.

over here, the difference was <5%.
That was unit the ethanol in regular fuel content went from 5 to 10% then like me more people switched to super premium because of the lower ethanol content. Since the demand went up, the price differential went to to ~10%

At Kwik Trip and Shell here in MN, premium runs about $1.00/gallon more than regular but it's ethanol free. Kwik Trip also has a premium with 10% ethanol for about 70 cents a gallon more than regular.

At the Shell in in southern NH near the border of MA yesterday 87 was $2.89, 91 was $3.89 and 93 was $4.49. So $1.60 difference per gallon.
