Refrigerator shopping

I happened to notice a refrigerator box over in the main aisle and ask about it. Salesperson checked on it and it was exactly what I was after. It was a special order that was never picked up and was on discount. She took another 10% off if I took it right then so I got a $3800 LG for $2250.
If anyone else happens into a situation like this, low-ball the store manager an offer. Worst they can do is say no.... When it comes to canceled orders like that, scratch-and-dent models, and so on, they have (1) motivation and that is get it out of the store.

It's weird with todays electronics. Cell phones, TV's and computers have gotten better. Refrigerators not so much.
It seems to be a design flaw repeated over and over and the failure is always the same. After some period of time, the area around the ice drawer starts to freeze up, and eventually, the area where the ice comes out is covered in ice. You can defrost the refrigerator and you can chisel the ice off and it will work for a while but happen again and again. It also seems to get worse with time with less time between freezing up. Eventually, the ice must infiltrate into the ice-making mechanism and at that point it's toast. It has been the same for every person I know experiencing this and across multiple different models and over multiple different years.

I have a 50" Samsung 1080p TV in the bedroom that must be 12 years old now and the picture is perfect and the sound is loud with great bass. I have a newer 55" Samsung 4K TV that is several models "above" the level the bedroom TV was back in the day that is 3 years old and the entire lower edge is washed out with this washout extending towards the center like a tree in three places. It has also been randomly restarting. At least Samsung doesn't make them like they used to.

I tell anyone who will listen to check the filter on a GE refrigerator before they buy. If it has an RPWFE water filter, plan on regular filter changes at $50 a pop. It's just a small charcoal filter with an RFID tag on the side, charging that much for one is highway robbery.

That's actually what replaced the Samsung. The water filter situation sucks, but at least the ice maker works and the refrigerator cools. I still feel like I've won the lottery. Isn't that sad? When I get around to it I'm going to order one of the block off dummy filters and peel the RF tag off of it and tape it to a new filter.

I've heard about customers special ordering items and then not picking them up only to later buy them on deep discount. Same in the paint department, customer would order a custom paint code, have it mixed up and never buy it. They would come back a few days later to buy the paint off the discount rack for pennies on the dollar. My buddy who worked in the paint department was tired of this and started to add extra pigment to the cans on the discount rack.

Samsung should hang their heads in shame over that four-door POS they made. I've never had so much trouble with an appliance in my life, and eventually couldn't even find a technician willing to work on it because it uses propane refrigerant. It was fun watching a $3,000 + refrigerator get hauled away at less than 4 years old.

I tell anyone who will listen.. stay away from Samsung.

Keep us posted on how the LG is doing. I have no experience with them.. yet.
Yes sir , Daughter had a Samsung , it was junkola

I went to Lowes about 5 years ago and got an LG dishwasher. Lowes delivered and set it up only to find out it was DOA from the factory. Had to wait 2 weeks for another unit, That one had to be repaired 3 times the first year. Then it leaked into the finished basement below ruining the ceiling, Never again LG!

Sparty only approves of Michigan based Whirlpool products!

They do but Samsung and LG are topping the crap list in appliances in the last 5 years, especially refrigerators.
Especially washing machines. They love using cast magnesium (?) that corrodes in bleachy water.

My Amana washer was the only one at the big box stores in a sea of Korean junk.

My Whirlpool is nothing but junk. Crooked door and a noisy compressor after 1.5 years of use.

My other house has a Panasonic refrigerator. You don’t see them in the US but they are really nice.

I've said it before and I'll say it again 👍

I'll agree with this also.
It's not that Whirlpool is all that much better, but you can get the parts for them so much easier.
Last three repair people that I have talked too agree (including the Bosch repair person that came out to repair my two week old Bosch dishwasher.)

I have already ordered my filter plug kit in order to do just this. They're not getting another cent from me if I can help it. Best of luck with your new icebox! (Hopefully not literally)

I think in this stupid economy you have to take what you can get unless you want to wait a couple months. We just replaced a Frigidaire that did nothing but break down for 5 years. We bought an LG because that is what was available in the 33 in size we needed. I don't think any are made like they used to be.
No.. appliances are now disposable items. A friend of mine owns an appliance store and he sees the crap that goes through. He told me that if my 20 year old dryer dies that we should rebuild it because the new stuff is junk. Btw I went through three Whirlpool refrigerators in four years. Twice replaced under warranty. Extremely high end unit that would become unrepairable after 18 months. After the third one died just out of warranty I was stuck watching a near 4K fridge go to the recycler. With covid shortages last year I was stuck getting another Whirlpool unit. I bought an extended warranty to fend off any short term problems. No more 25 year appliances out there folks.
