Rant - Please do not hoard motor oil.

Well, people hoard all kinds of things.....just look at the millionaires and billionaires that hoard MONEY and are never satisfied with what they have....they always want more even though they never intend to spend it....MONEY has become their GOD and they are never happy spending it.

People who hoard oil....use oil....and intend to use it for a meaningful purpose.

That's the BIG difference.

When I found Purolator pureones for $1/filter I couldn't resist buying 6. When I found Pennzoil conventional 2 for $4 I couldn't resist. When I found MMO $4 for a gallon I COULD NOT RESIST! Face it, most BITOGers are simply obsessed with all things oil/oil related and it will always be that way, especially as prices continue to climb and deals seem more worth picking up.

Would it be considered hoarding if at my shop we have ~1000 gallons of Kendall CJ-4 Li-Ti?

Rich people use money all the time -- hence the colossal market for upscale clothes, cars, homes, etc. People who hoard oil do not use it at any higher a rate (relative to the sizes of their stashes), and their purpose is no more "meaningful."

The hate for the rich on this board (and somehow in pop USA) is simply amazing. Just the fact that you lump all "the millionaires and billionaires" together is hilarious. People give me heck when I point this out.....but show me where I'm wrong.....others will say it's not "hate" but please substitute any other group (ethnic, sexual, bigender, skin color, etc) for "millionaires and billionaires" and you tell me it's not group hate.

Except that ethnic/sexual/skin color/etc. are born that way, rich people CHOOSE to be that way so it isn't the same thing.

Choose to be WHAT way? That makes it OK to hate someone?

OK So if I used poor as an example, that would be OK?

Besides, some people are born rich and some folks REALLY hate them!

People CHOOSE to be rich, they could give much of it away if they wanted to. It's not a condition they can't remedy. Poor is largely difficult if not impossible to remedy.

So "rich" is a condition that can be treated? Glad for that. The cure is to give all your money away. What are the symptoms of being rich? "hoard MONEY and are never satisfied with what they have"? "greed"? "always want more even though they never intend to spend it....MONEY has become their GOD and they are never happy spending it"? Just need to know, in case I choose to be that way.

Whoooaaaaa! Sorry I used that analogy. I did not know that it would touch off a lot of nerves. I apologize if I offended anyone and that was not my intention. I happened to use a "Scrooge" analogy as a means of showing that hoarding takes many forms and it should not be used as a stereotype to one particular group of people.

Stockpiling, Reserves, Hoarding and all synonyms used to describe "saving for a rainy day".

Maybe I should have used the homeless with their long trains of supermarket shopping carts loaded with all kinds of things from old clothing to empty cans and bottles to use as an analogy.

I consider my stockpiling of oil to be frugal and a means of getting friends, neighbors and family oil changes at a reasonable price with the knowledge that what is going into their vehicles is very good oil purchased at a very good price.

Unfortunately, in my hood, you never know what kind of oil or quality of oil is actually going into a vehicle during an OCI. So at least people know what they are getting when I do the OC for them.

Hmmm...by the multitude of definitions being offered here, I am guilty of being a hoarder, I guess.

I keep a few beers on hand, a few cuban cigars, and I buy oil on sale, so I can save money on maintenance, and I have a bit in the garage, I've given some of it (the beer, cigars, or the oil) away to folks who needed it or just shared it with friends.

I have some savings to cover unexpected expenses. I invest part of my income so that, in retirement, I have enough to live on and provide for my needs without depending on social security or my family. I give some of that away too...

Saving for a rainy day, buying on sale, investing for the future...I thought I was being a fiscally responsible member of society...and now, I find out that I am a guilty, hated hoarder...

All I can really say in my defense is, "join me"! let's take this thread back to sanity: It's nice to have a few cold ones, a few Qts of M1, or a few $$ when you need, or even just want, them...keeps the level of worry down...try it...you might like it!

Agree with you on all of your points.
I guess my question is, how did this devolve from a thread in which the OP made a vain request that people not hoard oil found at a deal, into one exploring a range of socio-economic topics?
The OP was silly to think that others who beat him to the store wouldn't stock up, but much of the rest of the above is way OT, I think.

No problem Mongo. I don't hate my aunt, I don't think she is much of a hoarder, and she certainly isn't greedy, but by many she could be defined as rich I suppose.....I don't hate my brother....you get the point.....some people hoard, some people have issues.....rich or poor.

I hoard ammo. But compared to many, I don't have that many rounds.....

My stash is at about 115 quarts total. I also hit the clearance and sales but I also have 4 cars that I keep regular oil changes going on. It goes pretty fast believe it or not. I'm down to about 11 filters right now.

So how many here have tried to buy more than the limit that was imposed on how many deals you could get from a store. Usually there is a limit of so many per person. How many actually could buy over the limit?

I'm not against buy a couple of extras if the deal is outstanding but seriously some folks on here could be shown on that show Hoarders on A&E.

Save SOME for the other patrons please. Thanks!

But quoting the old phrase "I've been rich & I've been poor, rich is better", I doubt you'll find many takers on the cure...

I have three changes and I dunno how many filters on hand, two vehicles are about due for their OC, the stuff won't be here long...

i bought a ton of m1 at Walmart a while back at $0.49/qt.
a bunch of motorcraft diesel oil too.cleaned the place out.
kids that were stocking the shelves looked at me like i was crazy.
raked it all into the carts.the kids told me how long it took them to set that up.told them i would save them the time if there was more in the back.just bring it to me.
they did.what uses 0w20 and 15w50?anything if you mix it!
they had never thought of that.had them come by after work and i set them up at cost.somehow they were not allowed to buy the stuff themselves.they will call me if that sort of deal comes up again.
best one was not oil but funny anyway.local meijer had #27 deep cycle batteries on closeout for $9.99 and no core.i happened to be standing there at the right time when the pallet was set out.
there were 6 on it.asked if there were more and no.
i grabbed 3 with each hand and headded for an empty cart.
someone made a comment about hoarding as i walked off carrying 6 80lb batteries.even got in my path still mouthing off!
his wife finally told him to shut up before he gets killed!
i laughed and told her "good idea".
he later appologised.
some are short on common sense.

Gah, you're the reason I can NEVER find shoes in my size!

@kc8adu:

I'm not a Ham yet, but I listen to you guys on HF all the time, I'm sure I have heard you on 80 meters at night. Can you tell me when and what frequency you generally are on the bands at night?

I take it you have heard the Possum net on 3843 with Mikey and Crusty? LOL
