I used M1 in Mazda when I owned it. Very good oil, so nothing against it (it was 5W30).
However, I treid once in 1.8T passat, it was too rough compare to GC.
When I got CC, I tried M1, bcs I was thinking that bcs of fuel dillution heavier oil might be better. First 5k I made moslty on HWY. I had several long trips (700+ miles) and it behaved OK. Next 5K i did mostly in city, and that is where I noticed a very bad smell in oil (fuel), there were some colder days, so engine would be rough in the morning.
So I decided to go with GC, never had rough start in the morning (and I was cranking few times on 0 degrees), if there is a lot of city driving, you can smell fuel, but nothing like M1. This is nothing scientific, but I just prefer GC. Not to mention it doe not burn a drop of GC!
