1995 pontiac bonneville, 196k miles. its my neighbors car, he puts maybe 100 miles a month on it. Going to run some quaker state defy 10W30, and a fram XG filter for 3-4 month ocis, regardless of mileage. i know the fram seems like overkill, but i figure with all the short trips it would be better at filtering contaminants, plus it was only 24 bucks for the oil and filter at walmart. should this combo be good for 3-4 month ocis?

No the engine will start develop lots of varnish and sludge!!!

Nah, QSD will easily go 3 months. I'd extend it out to 6 months.

95 Bonneville... which engine? Though I ask, it probably doesn't matter which variant of the 3800 it has. Those engines are practically bullet-proof and just about any xW-30 will be fine for (a minimum of) 3-4K regardless of driving conditions.

+1

The reason Defy is not wearing the API badge is because of the extra Zinc and wear additives... It doesn't meet the SN/SM economy standards.. It's not dangerous in an appropriate engine.

My only question is the COMMERCIAL... Prevent 98% of future wear.... AS OPPOSED TO WHAT????

Would it seem like the proper oil for the engine i mentioned above? it says on the bottle it wont harm the cats or emissions devices, but its still in the back of my head im thinking itll mess up the egr valve.

I can not find the SL rating on the label of 10-30, I almost bought it the other day too. Almost same car as the OP, but O have a Buick with a 3800.

Looking for an alternative to M1 HM, that is NOT Valvoline MaxLife...

The QS DEFY 5W30 that I just put into my Firebird FORMULA V8 yesterday, is SL! I looked on the 5qt JUG before replying to this post. And I believe the DEFY 10W30 that I was considering, read the same, IIRC when I was in W*M

I have the data sheet, all grades are SL-rated except for the 10W-40 which is SN-rated...

i had it up on rhino ramps to change it, when i started it to back it off the ramps it didnt have oil pressure for a few seconds, after i backed it off, it hovers right around 40 psi. cld that be the only reason for no pressure cause of it being on an incline on the ramps? the engine is pretty noisy and always has been.

At 196k miles. it's probably bulletproof.

Agreed, dilution and thinning are far more dangerous.
