Hello guys, hope your Christmas was great! I just wanted to post a short term update on my GF's car. First some backround on the car. It's the 98 Protege in my signature. I used PHM 5 or 10w30 (old formula pre-SN) in it depending on ambient temp for about 3.5 years. I replaced the VC gasket and wasn't impressed with the level of clean. So I started using YB 5 or 10w30 depending on ambient temp for about a year (also pre-SN.)

Fast forward to around April when I got some YB API SN for that car. During that run of the oil I added 7oz of MMO for the last 500 miles or so of the run. That seemed to have started some cleaning that I could see. So I figured with MMO was good, then Rotella would be better. So the next run was also SN YB that I topped off with Rotella 15w40 (this engine always burned oil.) With the RT1540 in there it used alittle less for the last 2k of the OCI. During this mix of 1030SN YB and RT the oil got black very very quickly (good!).

Now onto the short term update. The PYB 530 API SN (official on the API donut) oil is in there. 2k into the OC the 1.5L 4cyl has only consumed less than 1/4 qt. Also the cleaning that the MMO started is continuing. I can actually see metal colored metal where it was just "burnt skillet" in appearance.

Fast stats:
84,xxx miles to 160,xxx used PHM 5/10w30 @ 3-4k OCI.

160,xxx to 172,xxx (present) on API SN 5/10w30.

1.5L 4 cyl, 90ish hp, 3100 rpms @ 70 mph, 4 speed auto, 87 shell, 32-36mpg, filters used are Valvoline (Champ Lab clone), driving style is 95% highway and easy.

Summary:
530 new formula YB the engine only used .25 qts or less versus 1 qt in 2,000 miles time. This engine usually consumes ~2-2.5 qts during 3-4k miles.

Conclusion:
Very impressed thus far with YB. And thanks to BITOG for the continual knowledge that I try to soak in my brain. I now am running 5k or so OCI on this car.

Once SN/GF5 is the norm, the value of Rislone, MarvelMysteryOil, Autorx, Gunk, 5minute flushes.. will drop.

Sell your oil additive stocks now.

I'm also worried about sludge monsters. Have a feeling that SN/GF5 might clean up some engines too quickly. Should be interesting next year.

As a whole, everyone should benefit. Cleaned up engines and ring packs should improve MPG, reduce oil consumption, increase engine life.....

I only did that once. I haven't used that in the engine since then.

THANKS! It is good to hear experiences with this new oil. I was pretty skeptical and didn't know whether to load up on the SM or wait to hear how this SN is. Sounds like it worked well in your case. Appreciate the info! Pics would be nice;)

Will all conventional brands in the new SN spec clean as much as PYB does? Will they all be equal in that reguard? Name brand speaking that is...?

Seems PYB SN may be all you need now.

I still want other Oils, its just less significant now.

Agreed SN GF5 oils likely to remove need for additive cleaners,

That is what people have said every time the API launches a new specification, yet we still find a need for engine cleaning products. It seems as though oils are getting better, but engine demands are always greater than what the current lubricant spec can handle, especially if you consider typical customer abuse.
