Why do people who have sumps bigger than 5qts, buy a 5qt and a 1qt bottle?
I haven't checked, but surely the 5qt is cheaper/qt than the 1qt bottles?
Not have a buncha excess, don’t want to commit to a certain oil, don’t like mixing oils if not committed.

It is but now you're left measuring out 4qts out of a 5 qt jug just for one quart and then you're left with 4 open quarts out of jug. Then the next time you guy buy oil, you're taking 2 qts out of the next 5qt jug, etc etc. Not everything is about being a penny pinching OCD'er.

I don’t feel like putting on a lab coat while I measure out oil into different containers with graduated cylinders.

No need to play the “you have one container with three quarts and one container with 5. You have a two quart graduated cylinder , how do you get 5.5 quarts” game for the extra $3/qt for that extra quart.

I also shop around for deals in the couple months before an Oil change. I don’t keep more than a single extra quart on hand for storage reasons.

I'm not entirely certain how it's that complicated, they even have rough marks down the sides for the qts/litres.

I guess having a part-used oil can in my garage isn't a problem, but it's just easier for me to buy two 5qt bottles, and use the partial one for each top-up from the next new 5qt, or i can use the remaining 4 next time and top up with two from a new 5qt. It's so easy with the marks down the side, and that thing you stick in the engine to measure the amount of oil it has :D

I was being facetious of course.

I just don’t care to keep partially filled 5qt jugs around and the $3-4 dollar extra I end up paying is completely irrelevant.

I don’t, I buy like a 2.5 gallon jug or 5 gallon jug. Friends that have trailblazers that’s what I buy, traveller brand oil as they tell me to get that

I usually buy 2 5 quart jugs if I'm going to continue using the same oil. Then the next 4 OCI's only require 1 5 quart jug to be purchased each time.

2 cases of Mobil 1 ESP 0w20 were delivered for my next change. My 08 Jeep Wrangler 3.8 has a thirst for oil and I just had to replace both catalytic converters. I'm moving to this oil to protect them, on the chance the oil usage poisoned them. I've read quite a bit about this oil and think it will be a good one. I went 0w20 because I've mostly run the recommended 5w20 in this Jeep and it is the only one labeled as meeting API standards (SN for what I just bought, but new stock is SP). I've got a lifetime powertrain warranty, so it needs to meet/exceed API certification specs. I would have probably run 0w30 if it did. I'll run a Fram TG or Ultra in it. I'll be changing the oil today.

I'm returning this oil. It is significantly higher in phosphorus tnan Mobil 1 EP 0w20. My understanding is that Ph is what poisons the cats when burned. I may call Exom and ask them how this could protect cat converters better than oils with lower Ph. Maybe there is a combo of additives that negate the effects? I'll post up if I get an answer.

There is an agreed maximum amount of these additives if the oil has the API ratings etc. It should not poison the cats if it adheres to these standards.

It's only API SL, it only meets the requirements of the engine tests for the later API standards.

Both cats went bad. 1 at 155k and the other at 55k miles since last replaced under warranty. All on API SN oil. So my best educated guess is to look for the oil with the lowest phosphorus.

There's Delo 600 ADF, that has no phos in it, it carries no S-rating, only CK-4, I don't know if there would be some issue using it in a gasser or not.

Unless it's only sold in quarts (such as most ATF) or economically advantageous I never buy individual quarts because it's usually at least twice the cost per quart over bulk oil in 5 qt. jugs. I'm puzzled how people don't have space to store a single jug of motor oil when buying those individual quarts costs 2x as much as a jug of the stuff. Would you buy individual cans of soda? Or a 12 pack? A quart is $5-7, a jug of 5 qts is $13-20. The math isn't hard; neither the economics nor the measuring. And not having any on hand is equally bizarre. I've got a decade worth of oil changes on hand.

The great oil harvest of 2020-21 has been good to me. It started with the dip in oil prices in 2020, there were a lot of oil sales. Packed in a few hundred qts of the good stuff, about $1-2 per qt. To my surprise, 2021 has been even better to me; in spite of apparent oil price increases and obvious shortages on shelving at Walmart, they are clearancing out oil at a spectacular pace. Their Chevron Supreme at $8 per 5 qt. jug, yes please. I bet I have 20 of those now. It is truly bizarre.

Hit two local Walmarts again, to treasure hunt for their remaining clearanced $6 per jug Quaker State high mileage, and found five 5 qt. jugs. This is on top of cleaning out all the local Walmarts of hundreds of quarts of the stuff at a little over $1 per qt. Most seem to have a few more that surface after a few days so I've checked back when I return. Sure enough, they turn up on the shelving, and then go right into my cart, thru checkout and into my trunk. :)

I've cleaned out every Advanced Auto Parts of all their Carquest fluids which they have literally given me, hundreds of quarts worth in both 1 and 5 qt. containers. I estimate AAP just handed over $1500 of product to me this month. Perfectly good, brand new, beautiful, lubricants. The bizarre handling of their transition to Fram has led them to just dispose of all oils 'no sale.' Cleaned out the ones locally. Stopping in one today, found 2 more qts. hiding on a shelf and they gave them to me.

So, I returned today with 27 qts. of motor oil and ATF for a whopping $32 with tax. For just today's AAP and Walmart haul, normal retail, it should be noted, would have been $20 x 5, plus $7x2, or $114 or so.

The rebates have been stout as well, with the Castrol and M1 healthy rebates fulfilled. Another 20 qts at about $1.50 each.

Now, I'm just waiting and watching for the next clearance; will it be Castrol or Pennzoil?

:ROFLMAO: I’m SHOCKED that you can’t understand why some folks prefer to just buy a single quart.
