2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD off-road

~9 months and 5 k on the oil

Previous oil change M1 0w50 FS. SP
Installed a Mobil 1 EP filter

This oil change I drained the pan with the oil pump and added
Mobil 1 0w40 FS SP

This is the 4-5 oil change with this oil and the SN version. I ran a couple of 10k changes with it but lately I have shortened them as my service is getting to be more special.

This past 9 months the the truck was used for several trips To and down PINS so lots of beach driving and some rough days where 4x4 had to be used to pull through. So some nice summer and fall days churning sand, also a lot of high speed highway tps to and from corpus and Houston with a few trailer pulls, past three months while I was out of town it had a lot of short trips as my wife preferred to use it most days. So in town errands etc.

I left the filter in with only 5k. Miles and having run this filter for 10k and it looking great when I pulled it I have no issues leaving it in since I am continuing with the same oil. Truck will see more of the same service this summer as last summer and fall, fishing 4 wheeling and some pulling.


Inspections I checked my ball joints and steering linkage found I have a minor play in steering linkage on Rfr so I plan to replace both sides.

Tires are a little tired the general grabbers held up well, but sun heat and time beats up every tire. Looking to replace this year.

Topped windshield was, brake and coolant levels and condition look good each less than 2 years old. May flush breaks soon do to heavy moisture on coast.

Review of The 4 uncles pump. Second use with it and I had to fiddle with it a lot to get a vacuum.. I don’t recommend it. Maybe there are better brands but it is unsatisfactory to me at this point.
Shouldn’t take so long to drain the oil started hot but was ambient by the time I was down. I rigged my shop vac too it and it was better than the hand pump..

The truck has had factory fill to 5 k
Castrol magenetec 5w30 to 10k
Dealer 0w20 to 15k
Castrol magenetec 5w30 to 20k
Dealer fill at 25k
I then went through a lot of 5w30 and 0w20 RTG every 5 k
I did a couple of 10 k intervals of Kirkland 5w30 before switching to mobile 1 0w40 in 2022.

Engine seems pristine, no oil consumption. No stains. Dipstick looks brand new.

I used what I had. I’ll likely go 0W in the winter and 5W in the summer until my extended warranty is up. Then 5W all the way.

I'd be more concerned with sudden coolant loss. Unless Ford has addressed the issue, it isn't uncommon for the 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 Ecoboost engines to have failed cylinder liners which result in coolant seeping into the cylinders. He's in the mileage range for this failure. That's an engine replacement.

The new Escape 1.5 is a totally different engine family.

I believe that is a completely different 1.5L that has the cylinder liner failures. The 2022 Escape would have the 1.5L 3 cylinder.

May be, hopefully they've addressed the issue in their 3 cylinder engine.

I believe the redesigned 1.5L code named Dragon engine addressed those issues over the older escape engines which did have those issues. Time will tell if it has truly be resolved but so far so good.

2nd run of VRP. My son did most of the work while I supervised and supported.

Interesting thing happened with the black type OEM crush washer. The rubber or whatever it is coating on the washer came off and adhered to the drain pan and bolt. I was able to scrap it off fairly easily with a screwdriver. However this has never happened prior to using VRP. I have a supply of the blue coated OEM washers on hand so I used one of those on this OCI to see if it happens again. No noticeable leaks present. Let’s see if it’s an anomaly. More to come.

It was after only one use as I install new ones every time. I don’t have any more VRP on hand. But I might try the soaking exercise later.

I don't have any pictures of the truck.

I can tell you it's unrestored, and doesn't have a straight body panel on it. Cab corners and rocker panels are practically gone, frame is bent from a collision with a telephone pole twenty something years ago, and it has a big piece of sheet steel laid over the bed braces because the original steel was eaten away from hauling chicken manure for decades.

Subaru Forester 2024. 19947 total miles. Out: VRP 0w20 after 5100 miles. In: Mobil 1 ESP 0w30 with Subaru filter. Will change it every 5000 miles. It's been getting a bit better than 30 mpg on 20 weights until now. I'll bet it doesn't change a measurable amount. Love the way it sounds on start-up now...these aren't sewing-machine-smooth engines on start-up!

I also flushed the factory fill brake fluid out. As you’d expect, it was really green. My pneumatic oil extractor with a brake bleeder hose made short work of it. It took almost three 12 oz bottles of dot 3 to get all 4 corners looking good.
