This is a baffle that Toyota/Lexus have in the cover. Who knows why they make it look like sludge, rather than using a shiny piece of stainless steel?
There is a TSB for using caution when filling with oil that you don't jam the funnel/bottle into the hole too hard and bend the baffle.

I wish my Mustang 4.6L didn't have that black fill tube on the fill hole. Makes it harder to see inside. Oh well, guess I have to wait until I change my valve covers to snap a picture.

Oh, yes, absolutely true (but notice how nice and sparkly clean mine are
). I guess I might have been clearer. What I really wanted to make clear is that these engines came from the factory with this foamy-cushiony layer on the top of the baffle.
I've seen at least a dozen or so episodes on the internet of folks who are not familiar with the engine seeing the coating, and freaking out thinking it's a bad layer of carbon-sludge. Now, in the first picture, the layer has become crusty too, but for the most part still, it's just the layer that was put there when the engine was made. I'd love to meet the brain surgeon at Toyota who thought putting a layer of squishy black foam on the baffle was a good idea. . .

In the case, it looks like this:
And in action on my den carpet, like this:
Only problem I've seen is that the "standard" head is just a bit too big to get any depth inside. There's a super-small head, but that's another hundred bucks. Sometime soon. . .

These are interesting pics to me. There doesn't appear to be any sludge, but that's a pretty toasty looking coat of varnish, especially for a synthetic. What oil were you using? Any thoughts on why the varnish? Not that it's horrible or anything (functionally just fine, I'm sure) but it just looks like more than should be there.
