Y'all:

250k mile Honda K24 oil filler hole cleaning progress after using Restore & Protect

I started this thread because it shows how the oil filler hole cleaned up on our 250k mile old 2010 Honda Element SC.

We bought the Element new and it's been meticulously maintained with a lifetime of Castrol Black Bottle 5W-20 for its first 75k miles, then Castrol BB 5W-30 for the next 75K miles before finally settling on "German Castrol" 0W-30 for the last 100k miles. Always 5k OCIs with a new filter.

The upper end of the engine looked very clean. That said, there's this thin aluminum baffle inside the oil fill hole. This part of the baffle gets no oil splash, just vapors. It's always been a "dirty" spot, getting increasingly dark over the years.

The engine is super healthy and uses only about 1/8 quart per 5k OCI (I always check the oil level before changing). In other words the engine doesn't use oil and the internals were already super clean (based on looking through the oil fill hole with a flashlight).

Here are a sequence of three pictures that show how Restore and Protect 5W-30 cleaned that "dirty spot" baffle.

Impressive to me but I'll leave it to you to make your own judgements.

Top of the engine at 200k miles when I adjusted the valves. That's German Castrol 0W-30 you see in there.

This picture is after the first 1,200 miles on R&P. You can see some cleaning has already started. I changed the oil and filter with fresh R&P.

This picture is after 1,700 miles (2,900 in total). Much more cleaning progress. Once again I changed the oil and filter.

This picture is after 5,000 miles (7,900 miles in total). The circular clean spot in the middle is from me dabbing a rag on it. I was curious to see how persistent the remaining deposits were. Actually *wiping* with the rag would have made the surface 100% clean.

It's cleaning up well on that plate. Why does it bug me that a good full syn with everything else spotless, leaves that much from fumes or whatever? Sort of like @Glenda W. with the oil burning.

I know I posted pics in other threads of that baffle plate in my daughters '08 CRV 2.4L with HPL cleaning it up. Hers has darker/harder carbon stuff from before we got it. It's not a flow area but I figures there has to be some splash on there when it's running. Hers has oil on it when I check after shut down.

Super impressive! I'm currently running my first OCI of VRP 0W-20 in my 2010 CRV with the K24. I hope it can clean the baffle plate as much as yours! Best of luck with further OCI's and keep that Element - they were amazing cars for the time and I constantly still see them on the road with 300k - 400k miles!

My well maintained, barely broken in, K24W in my 2016 CRV EX just reached 43,000 miles and it's on its 5th OC of PUP. At 4,800 per year it's going to be a while before it gets into the high mileage club. It's nice to know that it has plenty of life left in it.

It idles smooth, but fully warmed up and in Sport mode, and it's looking for some open road or steep long hill to climb to show that it can deliver every one of the 185 horses it's rated for. It's like a sleeping sports car that somebody plopped a big box on top of it. Darn thing wants to get-up-and-go.
