Possibly counterfeit a01 filter

I agree, it's hoarding. In the OP's case though, he has estimated (before buying) how quickly he'll use these up so it's not quite the same. People hoarding gallons upon gallons of oil for vehicles they might now own in the future or for doing an oil change on a neighbor's vehicle because they have oil is strange.... If a neighbor asks me to change their oil, my response would be "you want me to run to O'Reilly's with you to get the stuff or if you're going to Walmart soon, I can tell you what to get?" (we have an O'Reilly's in our small town but Walmart is ~15 minutes away).

I can tell you exactly how many filters I have in my "stash": 0

Oil ? Ummmm, about 3/4 quart of 5W-20 Magnatec (wife's car uses 4-1/4 quarts) and 1/2 quart of Magnatec 0W-20 (son's car uses 4-1/2 quarts). I do have 3 quarts of Castrol ATF for my G35 but it takes 3.5-4 quarts for a drain and fill and I never remember to get an add'l quart.

I had a 8th gen si in the last 5 years and the a01 was always my go to filter, usually I buy 5 of them and get another 5 after using up all. After the 1st oil change of my new civic I realized that I probably can't get a01 in the near future, so instead of looking for a good replacement I just get enough filters for the next I don't know how many years. Even I sell the car after a few years I'm probably getting another Honda, so they won't be wasted.

Most of the oil hoarding is done when there's a good sale, so that makes sense.

I do find it a bit odd that some people want a Honda OE filter but then go out of the way to avoid the A02, to the point of opening up the possibility of some real counterfeit junk just to avoid a product built by Fram. There's some real sketchy stuff on Amazon and eBay.

For those who don't trust Honda's judgement in suppliers, there are plenty of other good and easy to get options in the aftermarket. Wix would be one good option among others. Then again, I don't have any problem with Fram in the first place. The used ones I have cut open all look fine. Honda wouldn't use Fram as a supplier if the filters were unreliable.

On the other hand, after ordering 30 filters, there's no need to worry about finding any more for a long time so it is a perfectly valid strategy. They can definitely be resold to others who want to avoid the Fram supplier filters, probably at a decent markup too.

for anyone scared that the A01 isnt being made anymore, you can still buy them from hondas after market company HAMP, they still make them, they used to be green but now i think they make them blue like the regular oem ones.
