As an ASE certified mechanic for 35+ years, I have probably installed many thousands of the plain old Fram orange can Extra Guard oil filter - I have *never* even heard of any direct firsthand knowledge of one of these failing that was properly installed.

Remember, this was the filter that outperformed all others in the largest unbiased double blind test of oil filters ever conducted in the history of automobiles (the famous Consumer Reports test where we learned that the medium range particles do most all of the damage)

So why all the hatin' on Fram in the world? - Is it a major sabotage campaign by competitors seeking to dethrone the largest seller of oil filters?

Is it that when someone screws up their oil change and hence their engine, they are pis-sed and want to find someone to blame/sue rather that admit they screwed up?

what is the deal? - I am frankly taken aback by all the Fram hate in online forums, not this one so much, but in most other automotive forums.

Orange Can of Death? - BALONEY!

Now you've done it! Uncle 6 will chime in any second now to tell us that we have no proof and blah, blah, blah. Here we go again.....

Installed hundreds of Fram's with no issues and still installing them. I will post a problem with a Fram as soon as I can prove it!...don't hold your breath as this could take awhile.

Its the OCOD! That's why. I drove a car 236K using nothing but Fram except for WM Supertech when I wanted to save money. (I did use M-1 on 6k OCI). I don't think there is much behind the hate.

I notice Ford sort of says in their manual to be careful about the filter you use, or the engine will make noise on startup, which I assume is not good. There are good filters out there, like Motorcraft that are cheap an unquestionably good. So, there's probably a grain of truth to it, like most Old Wive's Tales.

I used Fram for years(86-95) with no issues and hundreds of thousands of miles.

There's been some evidence that the 'regular' Fram has gone down in quality the last couple years, but that the Tough Guard is a really good filter.

Because when you pay for "#1" and you pull it open and it looks like it was made to bare minimum (I won't get into its actual capability here) standards, people are going to think they have been ripped off. It hurts more the longer you used it. So a lot of vitriol and hate is generated from that. There are other filters that cost half or less of a Fram and look to be of better quality (again, avoiding actual capability).
I couldnt care less about some CR test.

if someone can tell me about a better oil filter for my Lexus LS400 than the Fram Ultra XG8600 at any price, and back it up, I would LOVE to hear about it!

I hear this over and over again. But, at least where I live and shop, they cost about the same. As far as the Purolator being better, I'm not sure. Both are inexpensive filters and seem to work.

actually, NOT - Consumer Reports has a 77 year history of no advertising and no bias, with the back issues which prove their results over time, so you wanna retract that goofy statement?

The Ultra is a good filter, and the price is reasonable. Its probably the only Fram I would use. I was talking about the Orange Can specifically. Unfortunately its internal looks turn people off.

If you think anybody can be unbiased, you are deluding yourself.

well whatever "bias" y'all think they have, it must be clairvoyant, because whenever they rate something highly, it tends to be proven great over time and when they say it's gonna be unreliable, it tends to be proven over time to be junk!

Like I said, they have a 77 year track record that would blow your mind, glance through some back issues, and prove it to yourself!

I just wish they would recommend stocks to buy! - lol

One of my tractors would read a lower oil pressure when running a fram ora ange can. This caused me to inspect these filters.I found the ADBV on them to be tighbly glued to the base plate allowing little oil into the filter.Lately fram seems to have corrected this glue problem. I do inspect all filters before install and clean baseplate and threads.

Fram Extra Guard has 95% filter efficiency while the Purolator has 97% and costs less than Fram. Comparing with naked eyes of the two you can see Fram has a lot less media than Purolator. There is no reason to pay more for inferior product.

If there is no equivalent at the store then I would use Fram for shorter OCI.

The Ultra is in a different league than the rest of the other FRAM oil filters. There are many members here that recognize the Ultra as a very good filter, and it's the only FRAM they would use.

Having created my own oil filter test rig I can assure you the classic filters 20 microns better than a orange can. The fram will do the job but for me 80 cents less buys me a better filtering filter its a no brainer really. Also the adbv is junk on the frams orange can.

To all of the Fram haters out there, I think you are not gonna be real pleased when you find out who makes the K&N, Mobil 1, Royal Purple, and Toyota Racing Design (TRD) filters - hehe
