My wife's 2010 Honda Civic. Has 43,000 miles on it and been swapping back and forth between PYB or PP during its life span. I was checking the oil today and decided to shine my light in the oil filler to see how clean it was. Seems to me it's a pretty clean oil.

Looks great. But at 43k miles I would surely hope so. What oil change mileage interval are you using?

Right now I am doing 4k PYB and 7K PP. I have only done one PP change. I am sure you all are going to beat up on me for doing such low OCI's. I just get a little nervous when I try to stretch them out. I guess I need to get an analysis done to ease my worries.

Yes. 43K is nothing for a Honda engine. Its just getting started! (I hope) Any quality SN rated oil would give the same results most likely in that engine with my low OCI's.

Reason I took the photo is my father always used Castrol GTX in his vehicles. (Which is a good oil so please don't get upset!) When he got down in his back I started swinging by and helping him with his oil changes when he needed them. My moms 2001 Malibu (3.1 liter) always had a black build up on the cap I would have to clean off. Under the valve covers I could shine a light and it would have black flakes on everything and a black oil slime around the top. The PCV valve would have slimy build up in it. This was with 3,000 OCI and a Purolator classic filter. I started changing it with Havoline 5w30 black bottle and the same filter. All of that went away. (That is when I wish I took a before and after photo). Not knocking on Castrol but for some reason it didn't agree with that car. All of his other vehicles were clean that ran GTX.

Now I have this photo I will check with you guys in about 100,000 miles and see if this holds up!

Keep running and take a photo at 143k
Not the 1.5L in the Fit.

Thanks for sharing such a great picture sriley1358! We love seeing and hearing about engine success stories, we hope your wife's car sees many more miles with Pennzoil under the hood! - The Pennzoil Team

Any issues with the Fit?

Thanks for posting - it caused me to go look under the cap of my 2011 civic that is just shy of 100k miles. It looks just like yours!

So you're representing the Pennzoil team? If so which team?

I heard/believe/feel that the waxy sludge is still there but the new formulation Pennzoil hides it better. It is now clear waxy sludge.

I think you answered your second question with your first question.

Why do you say that?

I honestly feel like any big player in the market (even smaller companies like Warren Products) create good oil. You may have to change of it sooner than others. That is my opinion. I have no raw data to back that up.
For example, I usually use the cheapest oil Walmart sells to put in my 14.5 HP Briggs and Stratton lawn mower. It was built in 98 and never had an overhaul. Still a great running engine. I have always used the cheapest stuff I could find for it. Whether it was Havoline on sale or supertech or even Accel (Supertech and Accel both made by Warren). All I have ever had to do was readjust the valves last summer so I popped off the valve cover. It was so shiny and clean.Everything looked brand new. But I also keep the oil changed twice a summer. Reasonable OCI's on quality API rated oils are you're best bet.
On my vehicles though I usually go for the better quality oils. PQIAmerica.com shows a good comprehensive list of VOA of oils (which I am sure everyone here knows about!)
Thanks for the comments!
