Opinions on F150’s

My best gm was a 78 1 ton crew cab. 454/th400/4.1 rear gear. 323k it got a new gm ho 454 crate. The old 454 ran better than the new crate so it was sold at 328k. That was a great truck. Got 7-8mpg & didn’t matter if it was pulling a trailer of concrete or dry lol
I still have the 78 half ton k10 my dad bought when I was 6. It needs a complete body job and almost everything inside but it still runs and drives and it's 45 years old. If it wasn't for rust and rodents it would still be a solid truck.
My 2005 Silverado has 260k miles and 11,500 hours, used a work truck for land surveying. It was my company supplied vehicle (I was promoted when someone quit and I was given the newest a 2013 Silverado so shortly after i switched vehicles with my old supervisor "since I was driving shorter distances and the only car guy so I could deal with breakdowns".) The breakdowns never came and I was offered a job with better pay elsewhere and talked to my boss, next thing I knew I had a small raise and owned a 2005 Silverado which I have since been paid mileage to use.
I've had several 80s GM vehicles and all were good but the Silverado has been even better despite daily use all day long.
I just wish they still made them like this.

I was selective in finding my 2018. The safety ratings for the AL bodied fords is 5star across the board. Starting in the mid-late teens they even added a bar to prevent the front wheels from crushing your feet in a collision. If you are racking up miles, these things may count.

I have sync3 apim. Usability-wise, ford got this right, and it’s got apple carplay which is the best nav, the cheapest nav, and it works well. I’ve heard these can fail; mine has not. The apple phone is guiltier of quirks.

I get the advertised gas mileage, but I drive off hours and can optimize my commute. 21.7 on the display today, 2.7 10r80 4x4. Stock 18” wheels and stock tire size.

My 10r80 is a weak spot. I would avoid an original 10r80. As I write this, I’m aware that if it starts to balk again, I need to be ready to trade it. Lubeguard is holding it together.

Also, it weeps coolant on turbo coolant lines when towing a TT. Otherwise doesn’t seem to lose any.

Best tow vehicle I’ve owned, period, hands down. I spent some money and put fox adjustable shocks on the rear, tuned by accurune, and a hellwig rear sway, and it handles like an accord.

Cloth XL seats have been super comfy but the pads are collapsing quicker than other makes, and the plastic spring braces all snapped in mine. I weight 200lbs. Replaced the braces with pipe clamps and installed a new oem pad. Some don’t, but I find the seat very comfortable.

Exterior plastics are fading and cracking earlier than they should. I just sprayed the cowl with bed liner.

Truck is the quietest interior I’ve owned and I LOVE that.

Somehow I interpreted this as super duty. Apologies. Rereading I think you’re referring to 6.2 F150’s.

How many miles is on your friends 2013?
Around 80k. never any drivetrain issues but its got road salt cancer bad.
yes F150 !

Happy Independence Day!!!

I don’t live in an area where rust is of concern. Previous used vehicles I just try to make sure they’ve been western or south western vehicles their entire life, preferably one owner.

2stroke,
Those are good trucks. Hang on to it treat it right and it will last. Whatever you do, DO NOT NEGLECT The coolant. A drain and fill every year 50/50 with distilled water. If you do neglect it, plan on a new heater core. If you follow my schedule, you shouldn't have any problems. Overkill maybe, but pulling the dash is a pita.

It’s funny you say that. Mine is approaching 75k. I picked up two jugs last weekend for collecting old coolant, it’s been on my mind to dump and refill. Color looks great but it saw a lot of heat when towing, because anything over 40 mph was basically driving by boost. Brake fluid is 3 years old too, maybe 4. It’s time for that as well.

I had a 1999 F-150 with the 4.6 modular. Mine was the two valve sohc. I sold it with around 100,000 miles w/o any major issues.

I did replace the plugs early on after reading about the plug issues. Over torquing these plugs is a no no. One of the reasons related to failure. That and not replacing at an early interval.
Actually under torquing is the issue.

Absolutely not
I would agree. Not all 5.4L engines were paired with the 4R100. Some were, but not many; most were teamed to the 4R75W (a good trans when maintained). Obviously depended on the chassis application.

I had a 2002 Expedition SSV (special services vehicle); essentially a special build vehicle for the IN DNR. 5.4L with the 4R100. Heavy duty suspension, cooling package, etc. Wish I had kept that.

I've come across several 4x4, tow pkg, 5.4 97-03 F150s and they were all 4r100s. Interesting..
Since seeing that, I thought just the 4.2 and 4.6 got the 4r70. Learn something every day.
I also did not know the 97-03 ever got the 4r75. I thought it didn't happen until the body change in 04. Man, I need to brush up on my Fords.

When you say tow package do you mean the 7700 series? Those got the 4R100 from what I remember of my time in parts at the Ford dealer 21 years ago.

As you may recall-I traded in my 2020 F 150 because the 10 speed wasn't trust worthy. I just got back from over a 1,000 mile trip with my 23 Siverado with the 5.3-and ten speed. I am still utterly amazed how two transmissions developed jointly could be so different. Shifts in the Silverado are almost imperceptible. I was pulling my 5,000 pound travel trailer up a 9,000 foot pass-in to Leadville, Colorado in 90 degree heat-and the transmission was n the 180's and then cooled right down to the 170's on the downhill side. When in tow haul mode with the cruise control engaged-even when towing required no involvement from me with any gear selection.
This generation/powertrain of the Silverado is very good.

The Sync 3 in the Ford was good. I'm am dealing with a few electrical gremlins-with the infotainment system.
