Olive Oil Questions

I like Mina...
You can drink it straight with no after taste and it won't bother you at all. I had many brands and most are diluted Crap. You can't drink it. Laced with cheap vegetable oil even below canola... If you can't drink
It straight without fighting it that tells you its blended garbage.

I thought that when you sample (slurp) EVOO it should have a pungent pepper like taste which irritates the back of your throat. I've never tried drinking it straight.

It has a great pepper taste but that is probably for beginners. Like an alcoholic doesn't feel the bite like a newbie...lol

real olive oils are surely good, but the saturated fats that were said to be bad are also good + are very stable. lots of vids on cooking oils by people that know more than we, one thing thats unanamous is that typical highly processed SEED oils are very unhealthy + TOXIC. lots of vids on how canola SEEDS are processed + bleached + Hexane chemical used. your choice for sure the most people are blind about how bad for your health many things are, as well as how good real butter, tallow, + pig fat really IS!! researchers show the truth but due to $$$$$ much of the truth is hidden!!

Many authorities say that most olive oil on USA shelves is diluted and blends at best. ( negative)
Anybody know for sure which brand is the real deal?
How about our California makers?
Thanks all.
All the California olive oils I've used have been "real" olive oil and of good quality. For a good supermarket oil, look for California Olive Ranch oils (except for their Destination label, which is a blend of oils from different countries). They have numerous varieties of oil, none bad. Bariani produces excellent oil, both early and late harvest. McEvoy Ranch is fine. Corto is another that I've used and can recommend.

if the olive oil doesn't have a green tint to it I doubt there's much olive oil in it. That's not to say they cant colour any oil they wish

Pure olive oil is pale yellow like any other neutral oil. Extra virgin is from the first cold press and extracts parts of the olive that aren’t oil. Second or later pressing is usually further refined and may require heat to extract the oil.

We use an “extra light” olive oil for cooking. It doesn’t taste like olives.

We got some really good olive oil that we only found at a local farmers market. The seller actually lives in this area, but owns a farm near Orland, California.

No standard but pure olive oil is called "Extra Virgin". Read the label, no blending if that's on the label.Just like you see vanilla on a container of ice cream, you won't find neopolitan inside..
Pure olive oil is NOT extra virgin olive oil. When the term 'pure' is used, the word is intended to indicate there are no other ingredients or oils in the product other than olive oils, specifically a blend of virgin and refined olive oils.

While EVOO is, by definition, pure olive oil, pure oil is not necessarily EVOO.

We used to cook with canola oil, then we we switch to grapeseed oil. It was probably one of your posts that stopped me from buying those oils and now use avocado oil and will begin using butter more often as well. Thank you.

It depends on what the consumer wants. When I cook, I want a neutral oil whether it's soybean, corn, or olive oil. I've heard of cooking with extra virgin olive oil, but I'm thinking it kind of defeats the purpose. I don't generally want my fried vegetables to taste like olives.

The "extra virgin" will have more components (that add color and flavor) that aren't oil. Some of these are purported to have health benefits in addition to the actual fats being monounsaturated.

There is supposedly a difference in the typical makeup of fatty acids that's typically found in extra virgin vs extra light.

Here's a very nice oil, new to the market and hard to find. A friend grows and processes the fruit ... tried some last night for the first time ... worthy of consideration.

The bottles that are marked with names you can't pronounce are the real deal.
Seems a bunch of blends are coming out of Italy. Diluted with inferior oils and I can taste that in a second.
The junk oils are hard to swallow and fume up through your nose.
The real deal oils go down easy with no after taste.

Do you know what the field blend
Means in the line up??
I have what I believe is a good idea, but instead of posting my guess, however educated, I'll contact the producer and get the details. and get back to you as soon as I hear from him.

This video explains some of the issues with Italy and its olive oil.

@Zee09 I placed my semi-annual order today for 12L of organic EVOO from Italy, directly from a small producer which works out to be about $17/L. Ironically, I opened my last 3L tin earlier today, just a few hours before being contacted by the importer to place my new order for September delivery. Looks like I will have to try some Mina until my order arrives.

I always buy California Olive Ranch just to be sure to get the real thing. Problem is, here in Chicago
when I buy it at Mariano's Grocery store the bottled date is always at least 12 months old.
