First of all, Folks, don't try this at home. Literally. This slung oil all over the garage even before the canister was cut open. Not smart from a FOD check point of view either. XG2 filter is from 2016 or so when I bought a case for my Ram since the small size filter was not my preference. The filter was run about 6500 miles with Pennzoil Platinum. A lot of boat towing. Anti-drain valve was nice and flexible and the media has the wire mesh backing. The bypass valve shroud or what have you fit very tightly to the end cap and there is a dark material resembling a gasket at that point but it is not a soft material. Media end caps were very heavy duty and media was bonded well. The filter sits vertically but saw some deposits on one side primarily but I guess that could be from how it sat in the drain pan for about a week.

That's the "leaf spring" (which holds the guts in the filter tight) with the bypass valve built into it. The stiff fiber gasket built into the end cap seals the leaf spring 100%, especially since they knew how to stamp out smooth leaf springs back then.
