FRAM ULTRA 4967 CUT OPEN

Last filter from nthach. Obviously newer “cheapened” non wire backed ULTRA. I’m not a fan to say least. End caps were easy to take off, media I could tear very easily. Hole in media was from me being aggressive on spreading media apart

I don't think I've ever seen an Ultra that had such wavy pleats, but then again I normally don't look at the FU C&P threads here. The 4967s that I have seen have been pretty good so far. That is a short filter but normally there are plenty of pleats. Man I don't know what Fram is doing...

They do that in a Pentastar. So does every other filter in a Pentastar. Even the mesh backed ones. A Fram rep told me (take that for what it's worth) that they will still have they nylon/polymer mesh backing the XG cartridge filters. We'll see. But I've run Mobil 1 filters that don't have any backing and I can tear them easily but none have ever torn or even appeared to be remotely headed that way from use. So I'm not worried at all about the new XG's tearing, as long as they stay at the top of the filtration efficiency contest.

Wavy filter media on a short oil filter is not a good sign. A long one.... We could maybe see that has maybe a bit understandable. But a short filter there's no real excuse.

Cheapo welfare changing of this " supposed high end" filter.

Like I said before... 2 letters for ya...

Pic #7. Yikes! Wow! Or any other batman exclamation graphic one can think of. Just plain ugly pleat spacing, and not really wavy but angled pleats. Still rated for 20k miles, seriously? Cheapened media for sure and not even in the same time zone as the OG Ultra media and construction. And this is a tiny filter application.

Imo, just sad what FB has done to the Ultra.

Most concerning of all is the visible pleat count on the wavy side. Not that the filter actually went wavy. This is not something I've seen on an ultra. Maybe it's because of this tiny filter and flow? I wasn't an ultra guy before because I always change the filter. Fram's pricing on the tough guard doesn't make sense, so I usually go OCOD. Supertech white can is looking better by the day though.

My guess is that the media is cheapened and thinner. AND, it’s hot wire backed. Just a poor man’s observation

I'm glad to have 6 each older wire-backed XG3506 filters on the mud room shelf. Two to three each 4K to 5K mile OCI's with those...

I'm going to give the Champ PH44XL, or similar, a go at some point. The price is right on Rock Auto.
